Is Curling Really a Sport?

Today’s 44 is a move that Kristin (Stuft Mama) did with her class and showed on her blog.  I had to try it because it uses my favorite piece of equipment -the  BOSU!!!  It is a triceps dip with alternating kicks.

Start with your hands on the BOSU and feet on the ground –

Since I counted a right kick and a left kick as 1 rep, I had to do 88 tricep dips to complete the 44!!!  My arms were shaking!

The February challenge with Taylor (Lifting Revolution) is a fun one!  Last week we did 100 walking lunges every day.  This week it is 400 push-ups split however you like.  Yesterday I did 135 push-ups and today I did 80 so in 2 days I’m over half-way!!!

And, I added in Les Mills Combat – Extreme Cardio Fighter today.  60 minutes of kicking, punching, twisting and just plain fun!!!

Curling – is it a sport or just a past-time?  I don’t even get the concept.  Chris keeps saying it is like Shuffleboard.  Well, I’m pretty sure that shuffleboard  is a game they used to play on The Love Boat so I’m not convinced it is a true sport.

Here’s what I’ve figure out about curling – one person pushes the stone.

"sweeping'
“sweeping’

The rest of the team does a sweeping motion to speed up (or maybe it slows it down?) the stone.  Pretty sure the object is to get the stones into certain parts of the ring or something and try to knock your opponent’s stone out of the circle.

What I do know is that there is ZERO cardio involved and I’ve never seen any of the participants even come close to working up a sweat.

In the 2010 Vancouver Olympics one of the competitors was actually 6 months pregnant – Screen Shot 2014-02-11 at 9.32.49 PMSo, if you compare curling to some of the other events in the winter Olympics, is it really a sport?

Ski jumping – look at the strength required to hold the body in the jump position!!!

Snowboarding – Half Pipe:  These guys (and girls) are flying up to 15 feet in the air on some of their flips.  And, then they have to land the jump and do another and another and another….

Have you seen how fast these athletes guy down the mountain while still dodging the gates?!  Look at the leg strength required to hold the position without falling!!!

The amount of athleticism required to perform some of the jumps, holds and other tricks that the ice skaters perform is amazing!!!

All of the skating races seem brutal – short ones, longer ones – just staying in the low position requires tremendous lower body control!!

Then we go back to curling – at least they can wear “fun” pants!!!

So – what do you think?  Is curling really a sport or is it just a hobby?

Happy Wednesday!!

Shots, Shots and More Shots

Today’s 44 had to be fairly simple so I did triceps dips using 2 chairs.

And, no other work-out today because I have to take a day or so off thanks to yesterday’s miserable experience!!!

Some of you may remember from way back in April that I had the varicose veins in my legs stripped.  And, you may remember that the recovery was not at all what the DR told me it would be.  It was long and painful!!!

I moaned and complained a lot about my legs – here, here, here, here and here.

Yesterday was, hopefully, the final part of this process to get rid of the varicose veins.  I had a procedure called sclerotherapy done.

HOLY HELL – this HURT!!!

not even half of the needles used

I’m not sure what exactly was in the needles – saline and something else.

I took one picture and then quit watching – I blocked the view with my Nook!!!  I tried to count the # of injections but lost count after 20 or 25.

I think the ones on my left foot and ankle hurt the most but by that point I was in so much pain that I really couldn’t tell for sure.

I tried to chat with the nurse and DR while they worked but it was hard to talk much with my teeth clenched!!!

It has been 6.5 months since I had my initial surgery and I still DO NOT recommend this procedure.  I know that, according to my DR, my results were rare but the fact that I went into this thinking it would be a week long recovery and I have had pain in my legs (especially my left ankle) every day since I had the procedure done makes me wish I had never started this whole process.

Hopefully, this is a short (1-3 days) recovery like the DR said this time!

I’ve been telling myself that maybe after this step I will finally be happy that I had all of this done – I’m not there yet but maybe in another day!

I try not to live my life with regrets but this whole experience has definitely been a regret!!!

Happy Tuesday!

Happy Fall Back Day!

Today for my 44, I used my step in it’s normal home against the wall (usually I move it to another room).

right where it belongs

I did triceps dips with my toes stacked like this –

right over left
right over left

I don’t have full pictures because I live with 2 teen-age boys who like to sleep in (and it’s drill weekend so Chris is at work!).  I did 11 reps, then switched my feet –

left on top
left on top

I switched the feet every 11 reps so I did 22 with each foot on top.  Having my toes stacked made the normal triceps dip a little more challenging!!!

The boys and I did a different kind of 44 yesterday!!  We spent 2.5 hours raking and bagging leaves.  This is actually a little over 44 bags –

Bagged LeavesBagged LeavesAnd, the sad thing – we still have a pile that I’m fixing to bag as soon as I run to the store for more bags –

Talk about a work-out!!!  My back is feeling it today.  Jordan just got up and said his back hurts, too!!!  (Kind-of makes me feel better to know that I’m not the only one who is sore!)

Growing up I always hated the fall time change because it meant I had to be inside earlier.  As I’ve gotten older, I look forward to this time change – an extra hour of sleep!!!  (not that I usually sleep but at least we aren’t losing an hour!)

And – I’m happy that, at least for a few weeks, it won’t be dark when I take the boys to school!!!

Happy Sunday!

The Simple Life

Today I did my 43 in the hotel fitness room.  I used a bench and a stability ball to do triceps dips.

These pictures were long after I did the actual move.  I went down to the fitness room before the boys were even stirring around!!  I did have to take 2 short breaks to stretch my triceps while I was doing the 43.  I might be sore tomorrow!!

I ran on the small treadmill in the fitness room.  It was an AWFUL run.  I never felt like I settled into my breathing and I just felt sluggish the entire time.  I did 6 miles (plus 0.4 miles cool-down) but they were really slow.  I ended up getting through this run 1 minute at a time!!!

Yesterday, the boys and I spent time with my Poppa and my Aunt at their ranch.  I always love the time I spend out there because it is so peaceful!!

We usually spend time on the front porch enjoying the view – but yesterday it was too windy for Poppa to sit out there so we spent time inside with him.

The boys did make their trek up the “mountain” to say, “Hello, Texas.”  This is a tradition that started when Jordan was 2 and the little hill really did seem like a mountain.  He climbed up (with Chris) and then turned around, waved and shouted his greeting!!  Now, the boys can climb up – wave and yell and climb back down in about 5 minutes!!

The boys rode around for awhile with my Aunt – checking out the new fence and just enjoying the land.Aunt Jackie, Jordan & HunterI always feel like I’m experiencing a return to a much simpler life when I’m at the ranch.  the RanchThat bottom right picture is a swallow’s nest – it looks like it’s made out of rope but it is actually mud!!!

We will spend more time at the ranch this week visiting with my Poppa and I am looking forward to more “simple” days!!!  I didn’t take my laptop, left my phone in my purse and just enjoyed the place and the people that I was with!!!

In the mornings and evenings I enjoy our time at the hotel – swimming for the boys, mindless TV, happy hour, time on the laptop!!  But, during the day (for the next couple of days), I’m going to enjoy every minute that we can just hang out and live a SIMPLE life!!

Happy Tuesday!!

My Kind of Day!!

Today I worked my triceps with the 43.  I also really had to use my core because I included a stability ball.  I put my feet on the ball – I tried to keep just my feet and not let my calves rest on the ball to make it more difficult!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7iSDp6cWKs’]

I nearly lost the ball a couple of times but I made it through  43!!  It took quite a while after I finished for my arms to quit shaking!!!

I also spent some time on the elliptical again today.  I’m telling myself that even though it is not my favorite it is much better than nothing!!!  I did 45 minutes at a harder pace than the other day.  My legs feel very tingly again but I really think it is just the blood flowing!!!

So yesterday was just one of those perfect kind of  days!  I got cards from Chris and the boys:Mother's Day CardsBoth boys were very sweet with what they wrote – Mother's Day Cards

Mother's Day CardsAnd – they gave me a Garmin!!!

I can’t wait to actually start running again so I can test it out!!!GarminIn the meantime – I will just pretend!!!

The weather was gorgeous – no wind so the lake was perfect!!!  And – WE PUT THE BOAT IN THE WATER!!!!  This always make me happy because it means we made it through winter and now it’s summer – my favorite!!!BoatWe didn’t actually take a ride – Chris just put it in and drove it to the marina.  It was a little chilly – plus we had stuff to do still!

We had some friends over for dinner – grilled steaks and chicken,  campfire potatoes and this super easy summer corn – a perfect ending to a great day!!!

Now, I’m ready for a great week!!

Happy Monday!!
