Not Goodbye After all

For the last 2 weeks I have pretty much completely ignored this blog.    The main reason was so that I could be available and enjoy every minute of the boys break from school – it has been awesome!!  Lots of games and time spent as a family laughing!!!

The other reason I have avoided this place is because I told Chris 2 weeks ago that the next post I wrote would be my final post.  Every time I’ve thought about writing it I’ve walked away from my computer.

After a LOT of thought I don’t think I’m ready to give up my little corner.  I can’t imagine not interacting with all of my blog friends (I would list them but this would turn into a really long post!!!), if not daily then several times a week.

Even though I haven’t written a post lately, I have been reading other blogs and I often find myself smiling while reading or leaving a comment.

This year my biggest “goal” is to really focus on growing our venue because I know that there is so much untapped potential there.

I thought that giving up my blog would help me spend more time working on ideas.  Chris thinks I shouldn’t give up something I enjoy so much and I’ve finally decided that I would probably end up resenting the venue if I give up the happiness that blogging brings me.

So, I’ve decided to cut myself some slack (like not worrying about the fact that I didn’t write a 45 update for either of the past 2 weeks!!!) and not feel like I have to keep a specific schedule with posting.  There may be some weeks that I catch up on all of my favorite blogs days late and that will be OK, too!!!

I want 2015 to be a year full of fun and happiness with my family and friends which means letting go of standards that are unattainable and just enjoying what I can do!!

And, even though this is late – Screen Shot 2015-01-04 at 4.32.58 PM

I’m looking forward to so many things this year – hopefully it will include meeting some of my blog friends in person!!!

Happy Sunday!

One Year Ago We Became Business Owners

One year ago today we bought a business!!!

so excited after closing!!!
so excited after closing!!!

It has been a year full of many highs and many lows.  There have been lots of frustrations (mostly on my part!!!) and some very happy times.

We have hosted  weddings and receptions –

set up for a ceremony

There have been rehearsal dinners, graduation parties, anniversaries, birthday parties, Quinceaneras, holiday parties, business parties, business meetings and many other events.

We have had lots of new experiences like being part of the Bridal Fair –

We joined the local Downtown Business group and have tried to get involved with other small business owners.

My favorite event so far was our Christmas Day open house!!! (sadly I didn’t take many pictures!!!)

I think that Chris and I have learned even more about each other through this experience – I’ve learned that Chris can handle pretty much anything.  He stay calm even when I send him pictures like –

leaking pipe - basically a river across the entire entry

water on the floor of the ballroom - leaking from the roof

Chris has learned that I don’t handle things like water flooding the wood floors very well!!!  Basically I have had lots of high stress and panic over the last year.

But, I think that overall it was a good first year and I’m hoping that our 2nd year is even better!!!

Here’s to year #2 at The Governor’s Row House.

Happy Wednesday!!!

Scaling Back

Summer is my all-time favorite time of year!!!  In my perfect world it would be  full of family, sun and fun!

However, this summer is a little different because Screen Shot 2014-06-19 at 9.11.55 PMwe bought a business and there is always a list of stuff that needs to be done.

I’ve been feeling stressed because we have a few weeks (next week is one of them) that have back-to back-to back events and so I will have some early (earlier than normal!!) mornings to clean, set-up, wash table cloths and iron them……to get it ready for the next event.

The other stress is the fact that I feel like I need to work harder at promoting our business.

What I really want to do is hang out with these 2 goofy boys –

Jordan & Hunter

Spend time in the sun –

my favorite
my happy place

And, at some point we need to enjoy time on the boat!!

on the Pontoon!
on the Pontoon!

So, I told Chris that I’m going to continue to take calls on the business and do showings but I’m going to put all promotion efforts on the back burner until the boys go back to school.

And, I’ve been scaling down on time spent on the computer.  My BlogLovin’ feed is out of control and there are times that it takes me a couple days to respond to comments here.  I’m trying to be OK with that but it is a struggle.

So, I’m going to take some advice from Carla and “do what I can when I can.”

Do you feel like the summer is busier or more relaxing in your world?

Happy Friday!!

Kim

An Appointment with Myself

We are all busy – I never think that I’m busier than anyone else.

Screen Shot 2014-06-10 at 8.27.42 PM

I believe that we all have different ways we cope with the things that we need to do.

A lot of times my coping is to lose motivation.

Screen Shot 2014-06-10 at 8.32.42 PMOh, to be a cat…..

For the past few months, I’ve been working with an Action Coach while we are trying to build our business.  Running a business is a completely new thing for me and I finally realized that I need some help!!

Anyway, we meet every 2 weeks and then I have homework to do before our next meeting.

Screen Shot 2014-06-10 at 8.36.08 PM

I see the benefit in our meetings and even know that the “homework” is going to help grow our business BUT…..I put it off until the very last.  (That technique got me through grad school so don’t knock it!!!)

These days, the very last isn’t working for me – there is always something else that I need/want to do and then I just feel guilty (more than normal) that I’m not putting forth enough effort.

Yesterday at our meeting, my coach (Hi, Andrea!!!) had a great idea.  She told me to schedule an appointment with myself.  First she asked me when I was most productive.  I know (and shared in my post last week – Tuesday rewind) that mornings really are my most productive time.

Even though I hate my alarm, getting up at 5:00 am is not something I think twice about because I know that it is to workout!!!  But, I also know that the few hours after that workout are some of my best work times!!

Screen Shot 2014-06-10 at 8.47.28 PM

So, this  morning – after my workout – before I take Chris’ car in for an oil change (I took mine yesterday!!) I have 50 minutes plugged into my calendar/daily guide  – an appointment with myself!

I think/hope that if I schedule small amounts of time with myself several mornings a week, I will be able to stay ahead of the little things that I tend to put off!!!

Do you schedule appointments with yourself?
Do you have times that your motivation is completely zero?

Happy Wednesday!!!

Failing Is Just one Step on the Way to Success

Screen Shot 2014-04-13 at 8.37.55 PM

Sometimes we have to do things that take us way out of our comfort zones – whether it is related to our personal lives, fitness, work, or any other area of our lives it is necessary to push ourselves occasionally.

I feel like almost every day since August 27, 2013 I have had to push out of my comfort zone.  (That is the day we bought a business.)  I knew nothing about owning a business so my life has been all about a learning curve!

Screen Shot 2014-04-13 at 8.50.06 PMSo, in the past few months I’ve been trying lots of new things – some of those things work and others aren’t great – some have been total busts.

Saturday, I tried something and feel like it was pretty much an epic fail!!!  Thankfully the only thing I lost was my time (over 10 hours) and I learned a few things in the process.

I think that the idea is good – I just need to spend some time doing a little more prep work and figuring out the best way to promote the event so I’m not going to give up  – just find a new way!!!

Screen Shot 2014-04-13 at 8.39.27 PMSo I will just keep trying and let each failure get me a little closer to being successful.

I’m hoping that the lessons I learned during my last attempt at a 50 mile race will pay off in just under 4 weeks when I am competing in another 50!!!

Have you had an failures that learned from and turned into a great experience?

Happy Monday!!

Kim
