Are you Scared of the Dentist?

Today’s 43 came from Nellie over at Brooklyn Active Mama.  She always does a Wednesday move and comes up with some really fun exercises. Anytime she features one that I haven’t tried yet, I lfeel the need to turn it into  a daily 43.  Yesterday, Nellie featured  a Pilates Plank that I decided would be fun!

Start in plank position.  Lift one leg and rock back a little while pointing and flexing your foot.  Return to start, lift other leg and repeat = 1 rep.

This was a fun new way to get in a nice long plank and add a little additional core work. Plus – there was a bit of a  mental challenge because I had to focus on lifting,  rocking, pointing and flexing!!!

I pulled out my original Combat DVD – part of Les Mills Pump and did it this morning.  This was the workout that got me hooked on Combat to begin with and I still enjoy it!!!  45 minutes of punching and kicking – always a great way to start the day!!!

Today’s boot camp was fun!!!  We did an ABC workout – an exercise for each letter of the alphabet!!  Hunter helped me come up with some creative ideas for X & Y!!!  I will post the workout on the Boot Camp page later this week or over the weekend!  (I know that y’all are all dying to see it and give it a try!!!)

Dentists – so many people dread going to see the dentist!!!  For normal check-ups I don’t mind and neither do my boys.  However, some of the other dental work can be a little scary!!!Screen shot 2013-07-11 at 8.41.11 AMHunter has a permanent tooth (I think it is one of his incisors) that  is sideways in his gums.  It’s sort-of cool to see on the X-rays but I don’t have any of those pictures.Screen shot 2013-07-11 at 8.47.19 AMWhen he had his braces put on (January of this year), one of the goals was to create space for the impacted tooth and then to go in surgically and bring it down.

DSCN1352You can sort-of see the hole in his mouth where they have made space (he was not in the picture taking mood this morning!!!).

Well – today is the day!!!  Poor Hunter is nervous – good thing he only has another hour before it is time to get it done!!  They are just going to numb his mouth so that he doesn’t have to be put to sleep and then go in and cut the gum, attach a tiny chain to the tooth and bring it down.  (Making me cringe just to type this!!!)  No wonder he is cranky – he’s freaking out about having a knife in his mouth!!

I told him to keep his eyes closed the entire time so that he never sees any of the tools.  (I’ve had 4 gum grafts and I always do that!!!)  He is also planning to take his phone and listen to  music so that should help distract him.

The only thing that is making him feel a tiny bit better right now is the fact that when it is over he gets to spend the next few days doing his favorite activity – Screen shot 2013-07-11 at 9.00.45 AM

NBA2K13

He has to take it easy for a few days so that means he will get to spend more time than I usually allow playing his favorite game and watching movies/TV!!!  I think that he is looking forward to that but he is still pretty nervous and anxious.  Poor guy!!

Do you dread dentist visits?  Have you ever had any oral surgery that you were awake  while they did it?

Happy Thursday!!

Graduation Day!!!

Today’s 43 was all about the core!!  I got this move from Nellie’s blog Brooklyn Active Mama.  Every Wednesday she features a new move and today’s Weekly Wednesday Workout  was the windshield wiper!!!

I made a slight change to the way she had it demoed – in her version, you keep your knees bent.  I decided to increase the challenge and keep my legs straight!!!  You lay on your back with your arms extended out from your body and legs straight up.  Slowly lower your legs to the right (as far as you can go while keeping your upper body still) then move your legs slowly to the left – a right and left = 1 rep.  Confused? – watch the video!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lMDsIFtV4w’]

I had a hard time keeping my shoulder still – gotta keep working on it!!  Try some of these and you will immediately feel it in your obliques!!  After completing 43 I think I will be sore tomorrow!!!

Today I went back to one of my favorite workouts – Combat!!  I did Combat 60 – Ultimate Cardio Fighter!!!  It was awesome – I’ve definitely missed my combat time!!!!

GraduationI don’t know about other places/school districts but in our district you have 4 graduations before you finish school!!!  Kindergarten, 6th grade, 8th grade and of course, the final graduation from high school.

Today, I have a 6th grader and an 8th grader graduating!!!  (Which means that we are officially done with elementary school – Hunter and entering high school – Jordan!!!)

The 8th grade graduation is just names being called out – not really a ceremony.  The rest of the day is just “filler” for the kids.  We may win a “bad parent” award but Jordan didn’t want to go today and we said it was fine – his summer started yesterday!!!

1st thing in the morning!!
1st thing in the morning!!

I still made him let me take a picture!!  Can you tell he has only been up a few minutes?!  And, of course, he is in his standard white!!!  (He has worn white Nike shorts and a white Nike T-shirt every day since the beginning of 6th grade – with a few exceptions when he had to wear specific things!!!)

Hunter’s graduation from 6th grade starts with a lunch for students and parents/families followed by a 6th grade talent show and then the “graduation.”  It will be fun!!

Hunter loves neon yellow!!!  And the bowtie is nice addition for sure!!!

Do y’all have graduations from each “level” of school?

Happy Wednesday!!!

Weekend – Fun, Family, Friends

Today I took a move from my Combat workouts and turned it into my 43.  This was total cardio – plyo style!!

I did a double right knee (bounce on left foot), double left knee (bounce on right foot), then a double knee strike (jump with right knee in front), double knee strike (jump with left knee in front) = 1 rep.  Confused?  Check out the demo:

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVQ0SK-409k’]

(Because I’m a complete dork, I switched front knees once but it still worked out the same in the end!)

This 43 was fun and went quickly!

Hunter did a great job at his cello contest yesterday.

so serious

He was waiting for the judges to tell him to start – nervous?  I caught his eye and got him to smile for the next picture.

fixin to play - love the smile!

Considering that he had only practiced with the accompanist once before yesterday, he did a great job!!  At one point he forgot where he was but he smiled and found his way again.  He was the only one of the kids who played from memory yesterday.

I better get in the kitchen  and get busy with lunch prep:

  • barbecue brisket
  • cheesy potatoes
  • green bean casserole
  • oriental slaw
  • strawberry cheesecake

We have several friends coming over to spend part of the day – always fun!

And, more basketball later this afternoon.  Screen shot 2013-03-31 at 9.26.56 AM

Happy Sunday!  And Screen shot 2013-03-31 at 9.03.23 AM

Why I Blog

Today for my daily 43, I took another move from one of my Combat work-outs!  This one is just plain fun!!!

The move is actually a combo:

  • upper cut
  • upper cut
  • jab
  • jump-kick
  • 4 jumping jabs back

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9V6QEFw-24′]

(This might be my most uncoordinated looking demo yet!!!!)  And, quite frankly, I don’t think it matters which arm does which punch – just pick a way and go with it!!!  Then, switch sides and do 43 (or whatever # you choose ) more.

Check out my cool Combat gloves:

combat gloves - make you feel powerful!!!
combat gloves – make you feel powerful!!!

Wearing them makes me feel like a true combat fighter!!!

The rest of my work-out today was – wait for it… Les Mills Combat.  Combat 30 was up for today – this one is short (30 minutes) but pretty intense!!  Good news – 8 more jump kicks on each leg!!!

I have been blogging for almost 5 months and for some reason the past 2 nights I have laid in bed wide-awake(for way too many hours!!!) thinking about my blog.  Here’s what my sleep-deprived mind came up with:

  1. I started my blog because I thought that this year in addition to running my age on my birthday (as I have for a few years now), I would carry the age thing a step further.  I thought (still think, actually) it would be fun to pick a different exercise/move and do the # of  reps = to my age (43 as we all know by now!!!).
  2. I thought sharing them on a blog would do a couple of things.  First, it helps keep me accountable!  Second, I thought it would be a great way to share the idea of doing something active every day.  I realize that 43 is sort-of extreme for some (and not enough for others) but 5-10 is doable for everyone!!!
  3. When I first started the blog, I thought I would only post about the daily 43.  However, I realized after a short time that I actually really enjoy writing other stuff, too.  I like looking for silly pictures or funny quotes.  I love having a place to record little parts of my day (hence the name – daywithkt)!
  4. I think that there is a true blogging community (as evidence by the fact that I see the same names over and over on lots of the blogs I enjoy reading).  At some point I hope to be a bigger part of the growing community of fitness bloggers!
  5. I have been told that blogging is “self-indulgent” and I think that to a large extent it is.  But it is also nice to have a place to share thoughts and ideas on a particular topic.  For me, it is almost like a public form of my work-out log (and I’m OK with that!).

Writing out this little list has helped remind me why I started blogging – it had nothing to do with having lots of readers (although I wouldn’t mind that), lots of comments (also something I wouldn’t be opposed to) – I needed to remind myself to enjoy blogging and not become consumed by it.

Screen shot 2013-02-09 at 10.17.37 AM

I also need to remind myself not to compare my blog to any other blogs – defeats the point of my goal with blogging!!!Screen shot 2013-02-09 at 10.17.55 AMSo, I hope that taking the time to write all of this down will help me sleep better tonight help me stay focused on why I wanted to do a blog in the first place!!!

Happy Saturday – look I made a special treat for the boys breakfast!

Saturday morning treat for the boys!

(French toast – not my thing but they really like it!!!)

Hooray for Another Family Day!!!

Chris decided to take a day of leave and hang out with us today!!!  Yippee!  Then he only has to work Thursday and Friday this week – not too bad.  I love it when we all hang out together!

For my 43 today (Chris said he didn’t stay home to do 43 of anything – weird – I figured he would like this one!), I wanted to do some type of push-ups.  Plyo!!!  Jordan likes to do push-up demos usually but today he wasn’t totally into it (too much Christmas, maybe!).

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN5jGcmjsH8′]

I asked him to record me doing a couple – he said only if I still used his video – of course!!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=difBi9gTPzg’]

I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do all 43 on my toes or not.  I made it!!!  I did stop and stretch several times, though. That little jump is no joke!!!

Last night, a new friend (one of our neighbor’s daughters – in town for Christmas), text and asked if she could come over this morning to work out.  Yes!!!  Always fun to have a work-out partner.  I pulled out a favorite – Les Mills Combat.  Because of the stress fracture and DR rules, I haven’t done this in 3+ weeks – ahhhhh – so great today!!!  Erin liked it to.  We both got in a great work-out and had fun!!!

Our Christmas day was perfect.  We had plenty of time to relax and enjoy each other.  Last night we played games, ate (way too much) and hung out – awesome!!!

Chris did a great job with the turkey:

Frying the turkey!!!

Perfection!

Everyone had fun at dinner, I think.

Ready to dig in!

Good news – plenty of left-overs so I don’t need to cook today!!!  More time with my boys!!!

Happy Wednesday!
