20 miles x 2 (2/8 – 2/14)

This week I got in 2 long runs!!!  Next week I have more big running plans so I’m trying to be smart with all of the running!!

Sunday 2/8  45 standing side leg pulses.

start

The hardest part of this move was trying to stay balanced while I moved my leg up and down!!!  And, of course, I had to do the other leg.

Rest day (besides going to the grocery store, doing laundry, sweeping piles of sand out of the garage, washing my truck….).

Monday 2/9  45 arm pulses – keep arms bent at 90.

This was another small move but very effective – I felt it in my shoulders, upper back and biceps!

I did Jillian Michaels Hard Body Level 2 – it was hard!!!
I also did a 5 mile run (40:12) followed by an easy half mile.

Tuesday 2/10  45 squat with dumbbell set-down and pick-up.

I liked this move – to complete 45 reps I actually did 90 squats!!!

This was the first 20 mile run of the week.  It wasn’t bad at all!!! (2:33.56) I tacked on an easy cool-down mile for a total of 21.

Wednesday 2/11  45 back/hamstring stretches.

Not gonna lie – this was a really nice 45!!!

I did a fun workout that was fairly low impact – Turbo Jam, Cardio Party 3.

Thursday 2/12  45 glute bridge with march (toes up).  This move I got from Nellie’s (Brooklyn Active Mama) Weekly Wednesday Workout.

start position

switch and pull in left leg
switch and pull in left leg

See why it’s called a “march”?  I tried to make sure that I was keeping my hips up the entire time – this was a challenge!!

And, I did my 2nd 20 mile run of the week.  Funny thing is the time was almost the same (2:33.50) – just 6 seconds faster than Tuesday!  I ended up doing 1.5 miles as a cool-down this time for 21.5 total.

Friday 2/13  45 side lunge skaters – staying low the entire time.

lunge to the left
lunge to the left
lunge right
lunge right

The goal on this move is to stay low and work your quads the entire time.  (a right-left lunge = 1 rep)  And, I stood in the sunbeam – because it was warm!!!

I did a workout I hadn’t done in awhile – Denise Austin – Get Fit Fast.  One thing I really like about Denise Austin’s workouts is she features “real” looking people – people who look like me with hips and not a 6-pack!!!

Saturday 2/14  45 dead bugs while on wobble ball with shoulders slightly off ground.

ready

drop right leg
drop right leg
drop left leg
drop left leg

I liked this move but actually felt it much more in my hip flexors than in my core.  (right-left drop = 1 rep)

Today was my final run of the week – 5 miles in 39:21 followed by an easy cool down mile.

I’m happy that I met my running goal for the week – 50 miles hard and 4 easy miles to get over the 50 mile mark for the week.  The next 2 weeks I’m hoping to get my mileage a little higher and then I will ease up some.

Happy Saturday!!  Happy Valentine’s Day!

Kim

Back on Track (1/11 – 1/17)

This week has been a much stronger week of workouts!  I’m hoping to start getting in a few mega runs soon!!!

Sunday 1/11  45 supine rolls, great for your core and also your upper back.

Make sure your elbows are pushing down to the floor
Make sure your elbows are pushing down to the floor
crunch up but keep your elbows pushing into the floor the entire time
crunch up but keep your elbows pushing into the floor the entire time

I got in a 6 mile run (45:01) at a faster pace than I had been running for awhile followed by an easy mile.

Monday 1/12  45 double knee in to a full body extension with arms extended.

Knees in (excuse the blurry photo - hard to get a good mirror picture!!)

I did a DVD that I don’t do often but it really is a good one – MashUp Conditioning.  This DVD has 7 different workouts (called Tempos) that are 15 minutes each.  Each segment has strength, HIIT, core.  I did Tempos 5,6 and 7.

Tuesday 1/13  45 plies with heels up.

easy part

I always love the feeling in my inner thighs when I do plies!!!

I ran 10 miles!!!  (75:33) I finished off the workout with an easy mile.

Wednesday 1/14  45 step-up to knee, step down and lunge back.  This move is similar to one that Josie (YumYucky) did – stairless step climbing.

step up with left leg
step up with left leg
right knee up
right knee up
step down and lunge back with the left leg
step down and lunge back with the left leg

After I did 45 like that and had shaky legs, I switched the whole pattern for another set!!

step up with right leg
step up with right leg
left knee up
left knee up
lunge back with right leg
lunge back with right leg

Fun move – and my heart rate really got up since it is all lower body work.

I did one of my 10 Minute Solution DVDs – Tone Trouble Zones.  This workout uses a band –

the green one for this workout
the green one at the bottom  for this workout

and is very effective.

I also walked 2.45 miles with a 10% incline (had some DVRed shows to catch up on!!).

Thursday 1/15  45 single leg bridges with one leg crossed over the other and the supporting foot on a stability ball.  This move is from Nellie’s (Brooklyn Active Mama) weekly Wednesday workout.

YIKES!!  This move was hard!!  Probably why my hamstrings are sore today (2 days later!!).

This was another day of running – 8 miles in 59:37 followed by 1.75 easy miles.

Friday 1/16  45 side leg abduction with band.

I love moves like this because while it works the hip of the leg lifting, the standing leg also starts shaking!!!

I don’t know if you can tell but while I lifted my leg I also pulled on the band for some extra resistance.

I did Denise Austin’s Personal Training System.  This is a full body workout with about 20 minutes of cardio followed by 10 minutes of lower body, 10 minutes upper body, 10 minutes core and 10 minutes of stretching.

Saturday 1/17  45 bow lifts.

Pretty sure this is the first time I’ve ever done any of the pictures in our bedroom – I have to stay out of the light today and this room is one of the best choices.

Overall this was a really good week of workouts.  I’m still incorporating a lot of the moves from physical therapy into my workouts – just amping them up a little.  And, my running speed is starting to pick back up!!  Now I think I’m ready to slowly increase my mileage again!!

Happy Saturday!

Kim

Still Not Running (11/2 – 11/8)

Sometimes as runners/athletes we make choices based on what we want to do and not what we should do – at least I know I’m like that.  This week was one of those times – I just tried to do what I wanted as far as working out.  It didn’t really work but…..

Sunday 11/2  45 machine gun kicks.

balance on right leg - left leg kicks
balance on right leg – left leg kicks
extend leg
extend leg

These go quickly – the challenge is supporting yourself on the standing leg and staying balanced while moving your leg back and forth!!  And, both sides have to be worked equally –

ready for side 2
ready for side 2
go

This move is actually one I learned from TaeBo!!!

After a week almost completely off and a couple other minimal weeks, I decided to try and run.  It wasn’t great but I pushed through and did a slow 5 miles.  (sometimes I’m not very smart!!!)

Monday 11/3  45 star crunches – right hand to left foot, down, left hand to right foot = 1 rep.

the nice part

up and reach

Return to extended position then switch sides –

And, since I was already working my core I decided to do TaeBo Insane Abs.  This workout always makes me sore for a few days!!!

Tuesday 11/4  45 standing crunches (hold each crunch about 3 seconds).

ready
ready
round and squeeze - blow all the air out and hold
round and squeeze – blow all the air out and hold

I really like standing crunches like this even though it looks a little odd!!!

I wanted to run again but it only took about 3 steps to realize that wasn’t going to happen.  So I walked 6.35 miles at a 10% incline.

Wednesday 11/5  45 elbow plank with knee tap to a leg lift – alternate sides (right – left = 1 rep).

start in plank
start in plank
right knee barely taps ground
right knee barely taps ground
lift right leg
lift right leg

Return to plank then do left side –

left knee tap
left knee tap
lift left leg
lift left leg

This ended up being a LONG time to hold plank by the time I did all 45 reps!!!

I pulled out another older DVD – Denise Austin:  Personal Training System.   Many years ago this was my go-to workout when I had a stress fracture in my foot and we were traveling – 20 minutes of cardio, 10 minutes upper body, 10 minutes lower body, 10 minutes abs and 10 minutes stretching.

Thursday 11/6  45 fly to pull-over.  (8 pounds because 45 is a lot!!)

start
start
open to fly
open to fly
bring arms back to certain and push weights together
bring arms back to center  and push weights together
pull arms over head (don't touch the ground)
pull arms over head (don’t touch the ground)

Keeping this movement slow and controlled is the key (especially on the down part!!).   My chest is still sore from this one!!!

I’ve mentioned before that I love the 10 Minute Solution DVDs.  I chose Sculpt, Tone & Reshape with the Figure 8 for the workout.  The figure 8 is a resistance band.

figure 8 band
figure 8 band

I like the combination of moves in the workout using the band!!

Friday 11/7  45 side plank dips on the BOSU.  This move is a move I got from Nellie (Brooklyn Active Mama) and her weekly Wednesday Workouts.

ready

Holding plank while lifting and lowering your hips is a challenge – holding the plank on the BOSU makes it an even better challenge!!!

And, I tried and failed at running again!!   So I just walked 4.25 miles at a 10% incline.

Saturday 11/8  45 standing pilates leg circles.

front

out to side

to back – squeeze your butt at this point to help with balance!!

If you look closely you can see that my foot is barely off the ground.  Even to close the circle (half circle actually) you keep it just above the ground.

I did all 45 on one leg before switching sides.

front
front

I like this move even though it is small – after several reps you will start to feel it in your thighs, core and butt!!

I’m not thrilled that I can’t run still but I guess I will just keep doing things that don’t make my leg hurt worse until I get some answers from the DR(s)!!!

Happy Saturday!

Kim

Friday Funnies Are Back!!

Today I tried a move that completely intimidated me – a wall climb!  Ever heard of it? I hadn’t either until the other day when 6 Pack Momma @ She Runs Everywhere did a little video demonstration.  Well, that move did not end up being my 43!!!  I did a grand total of 4!!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq5GZLzYlYU’]

And, even those weren’t very good because you are supposed to get your hands much closer to the wall and take yourself all the way to vertical – like I said – I was totally intimidated by this move!!!!  A 43 FAIL!!!

So, for my real 43 I did a killer lower body move!!!

  • squat with feet together
  • stay in squat & step right leg out then back in
  • lift right knee
  • extend right leg (while your knee is up)
  • bring leg in & lower foot
  • Repeat (x 43)

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JikMbSaL7A’]

And, once your left hip is totally burning and your quad is shaking (and you have completed all your reps!!!), switch legs and do some more – 43 more for me!!!

I decided to change things up with my workout today and do some yoga.  I did Denise Austin’s Fat Burning Yoga.  It was pretty good – a total of 60 minutes with plenty of strength work, core work and of course, flexibility.  I can only take Denise in small doses but I usually like her workouts!!

And, because the past week has been full of extreme emotions I decided that it was time for some more humor over here!!!

Happy Friday!

Kim

Fascinating Fun Friday!!

Part of the idea for today’s 43 came from Marcia who said curtsey lunges were one of her favorite exercises.  I paired the curtsey lunge up with a couple of other moves and got a nice little  43.

I did the curtsey lunge and while holding the lunge did a bicep curl (I used 10 pound DBs today) then I stood and lifted the back leg while squeezing my butt = 1 rep.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK1gfw0ZXP4′]

Besides the fact that I nearly lost my balance during the demo – it was great!  This 43 was pretty challenging – my quads were burning and I got my heart rate up since it was upper and lower body combined!!!    43 on the 2nd leg was the real kicker!

At one point I stopped for a second to stretch and told Hunter that this was a hard one.  He said, “You can do it.  You’ve done all of them so far.”  So sweet!!  Of course, he didn’t look up from what he was doing at the time.  (This is one of his favorite morning activities before I take him to school – not filming me or even watching me sweat – learning new techniques with his cubes!!)

learning yet another method to solve one of the cubes!
learning yet another method to solve one of the cubes!

Thanks to Hunter and his encouragement, I made it through another 43!

Today I decided to do a low-impact type workout (especially after yesterday’s crazy Tabata madness!) since I have a super long run planned for tomorrow.  I pulled out an oldie – Denise Austin:  Fat-Blasing Yoga.  I don’t do yoga often but I have found a few DVDs that I really enjoy.  Angela just did a great post about the benefits of yoga for runners so I figured today was a good day for it.

I actually have a # of Denise Austin’s DVDs – sometimes I just follow along without the sound but she does have some really great workouts.  The yoga one is a nice mix of strength work and stretching.  At the end there is a 15 minute section that is primarily core using a stability ball.  It was a nice break from running, jumping….

real clothes don't happen often anymore!
real clothes don’t happen often anymore!

Yesterday I actually put on non-workout clothes!!!  Sad part was that it was to go to a funeral (a friend of mine lost her Dad this week).  Her dad served in the Navy during World War II and so at the cemetery they had the military service – 2 Navy men – salute as casket is carried up, Taps and the flag (unfold, refold then present it).  Military services always sort-of get to me.  Screen shot 2013-03-15 at 9.59.37 AMI told Chris that I never want someone to hand me that flag – so do what you need to do to make sure that doesn’t happen, OK?

Well, it is going to be Fun Friday!  Even though it is still in the 30s right now, we are supposed to get up to 80!!!  I can’t wait.

Chris is off today and the boys will be on Spring Break when they get home this afternoon.  I have a friend who is just starting to sell Origami Owl jewelry so I’m going to her party this afternoon.  And, it’s basketball tournament time!!!!  (Even though my teamScreen shot 2013-03-15 at 10.05.45 AMis already out – still love the tournament!)

Happy Fun Friday!!!

Kim
