A Driving Rant

Today’s 43 was HARD!!!  I got the move from Tamara at Fitknitchick.  She demoed a workout that included 5 favorite ab moves so I used one of the moves – the Surrender Squat.

Start standing with a dumbbell held in both hands overhead (I used a 10 pound DB).  Kneel down – left knee, right knee  – then stand – left leg, right leg – repeat leading with your right leg = 1 rep.

43 of these were no joke!!!  And, I agree that these work your abs/core but you will also feel the move in your shoulders (from holding the DB overhead), your quads and your butt.  Try it – just a few will have you shaking!!

I decided to take another day off since I start Boot Camp up again on Monday – gotta be ready with some great workouts!!!

Screen shot 2013-06-29 at 8.09.59 AMAfter 2 long days of driving in the past week, I have a few issues to vent about!!!  Screen shot 2013-06-29 at 8.16.48 AMThese signs are posted for a reason!!!  I’m rarely the slow driver – and when I have to pass someone that is just putting along in the left lane it drives me crazy!!!Screen shot 2013-06-29 at 8.07.56 AMIn fact, I think I will make my own sign for our next road trip!!!  Screen shot 2013-06-29 at 8.08.17 AMMaybe we could start a system where all idiot drivers have one lane and the rest of us can have the other lane to ourselves!!!  Screen shot 2013-06-29 at 8.17.55 AMSo, clearly I have a huge issue with people who just take up space in the left lane – especially when it means I have to hit my break and take off my cruise control because of them!Screen shot 2013-06-29 at 8.17.31 AMAnd, don’t even get me started on people who think that driving is a game!!!  It’s not a game and I don’t want to play with you on the highway!!!Screen shot 2013-06-29 at 8.19.07 AMIt’s called cruise control – try it – I promise it will make your driving life (and mine!) so much better!!!  I hate it when the same car and I go back and forth 20 times!!  I know that I’m driving the same speed because I love cruise control – please don’t pass me then slow down and let me pass you over and over!!  Screen shot 2013-06-29 at 8.15.37 AMAnd the person who thinks they can zip up to the front of the line waiting to merge – I’m pretty much never going to let them in front of me.  If I had to wait in line because of the no passing sign then they should have waited, also!!!Screen shot 2013-06-29 at 8.31.54 AMReally?!  Yesterday, on more than one occasion, I ended up behind 2 trucks – both going the same speed but taking up the whole road.  WHY????  Screen shot 2013-06-29 at 8.08.57 AMPeople who leave their turn signals on forever don’t annoy me as much as drivers who NEVER use their turn signal!  Screen shot 2013-06-29 at 8.11.23 AMTurn signals are a great driving device – they should get lots of use!!!  Especially if you feel the need to change lanes and cut right in front of me!!!

I feel much better now that I got all of my driving frustration off of my chest!!!

What highway driving issues annoy you?

Here is a little clip with my least favorite part of the drive home from Abilene, TX.  There is a huge bridge that looks like you are going to drive off of the edge of the earth and it pretty much freaks me out every time!!!  (Jordan entertained himself filming this!)

Age Themed Workouts – My Favorite!!!

Today’s 43 was a fairly simple one (because I knew what was coming up in the rest of my workout!).  I used some of my tubing and did double arm rows.TubingJust stand with both feet on the band – bend over with knees slightly bent and row.  I choked way down on the band so there would be more resistance.

Up until a year or two ago I rarely, if ever, worked my back – now I try to make sure I work it as much as my legs, arms and core!!!

Today was another day of Insanity Asylum – Speed and Agility.  I think this one might be the hardest (until tomorrow when I do a different one!!!).  It is 45 minutes and about half of that time is spent in the plank/push-up position doing all sorts of “fun” moves.  3 rounds of progression in & out abs (one of my past 43s) –

Plus, progression mountain climbers (same concept as the in & out abs but doing mountain climbers), bear crawls, agility planks……It is brutal!!!

Happy News – One week from today I will complete this round of  Insanity Asylum!!!!

I also did a fun little age-themed workout today.  Last week, Tamara at Fitknitchick celebrated her birthday.  Yesterday she shared an age-themed birthday workout that one of her trainer friends designed for her – this one was sort of a CrossFit style.  I decided to play along with her because we all know that I love doing age related reps!!!

The workout consisted of the following moves:

  • KettleBell Swings x 46  (I used a 20 pound KB and did full range swings)
  • burpees x 46 (with push-up)
  • ab crunches x 46
  • box jumps x 46 (I jumped onto this box – 14″)14" double step (the Transfirmer)
  • push-ups x 46  (brutal after 46 burpees!!!)
  • reverse lunges x 46 (I did 46 with the right leg and then 46 left)
  • pull-ups x 46 (mine were assisted pull-ups using a step-stool to help)
  • plank for 46 seconds (I did mine with my arms extended in push-up position)

Total time to complete this was 18:30.  I couldn’t believe how much harder 46 reps were than my normal 43 – I think because in my mind, 43 is just a few more than 40 but 46 is almost 50.

Since the whole age-themed workout is sort-of the concept behind my blog with my goal to do a daily 43 every day for the year that I’m 43, I was super excited to see another workouts set-up using age for the number of reps!! It is a fun way to challenge yourself whether you do it on your birthday or every day!!!

Have you ever done a birthday/age related challenge?

Happy Saturday!!!

Too Busy for a Deployment – Thanks Anyway!!

For my 43 today I borrowed a move from Fitknitchick.  On Friday, she had a really great circuit that she shared on her blog.  I just took one of the moves from it and turned it into my 43.

The move is an elevated plank knee-in.  You start in plank except your feet are on the wall.  The higher your feet, the easier the move will be.  I tried (key word being – tried!) to keep a level plank because you know I love a challenge!  From that crazy position, you alternate bringing your knees in to your chest.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adPwOI7pVWA’]

I counted a right knee & a left knee as 1 rep.  I’m not gonna lie – this was a HARD 43!!!

Then, I did a bit of Les Mills Combat – Combat 45.  I know that the other day Combat 60 Live was my favorite but today this one is my fav!!!  I love some of the jumping kicks in this one!!!

I decided to test my Achilles on the treadmill today!  I ran 5 miles with 1.5% incline (6:15 pace) – with an easy mile after to cool down.  I’m not hobbling right now so hopefully the week without running helped!!!

About the time I finished my run, Chris sent me a text about an upcoming deployment.  I’m pretty used to this kind-of thing by now!!  However, he said they need some crews.

Ummmm……HELLO!!! I’m running a 50 mile race  and you are supposed to be the head of my road crew!!  Then we have Jordan’s birthday and stuff…..Can you just tell them we are kind-of busy??  Nope!!

Deployments – what can I say??  The best part of a deployment?

hurry up!!

Oh well, several months to get it all worked out!!  In the meantime – gotta make every minute count!!

Happy Monday!
