“It’s Against the Law”

Today for my 44 I tried a new to me move – a football stomp with an axe jump (plyo  jack).  The football stomp is basically fast feet for about 5 seconds and then you do a plyo jack.

(Still can’t figure out why all the early morning videos are so yellow – better do some playing around with my camera!)  This was a fun 44 and it went really quickly!

I haven’t been running a lot lately (mental block & babying my Achilles) but thought I should get in a few more runs in the next week and a half so that’s what I did this morning.

The run was great – I did 6 miles at a quick pace and then an easy 1.75 miles for 61:00 total minutes of running.  (1.5% incline)  Hopefully another couple of runs will happen in the next week and then it will be time to see what I’m made of!!!

Screen shot 2013-10-01 at 9.17.24 PMI rarely have any type of controversial post and political stuff isn’t a big topic for me.  However, I couldn’t totally let this whole government thing go.

As you all know, Chris is a pilot for the United States Air Force – he is in the Kansas Air National Guard.  For 27 years he has served our country.

Now, thanks to a very unsettled government, there are many military and other government people who are being furloughed and are looking at a few days, weeks, whatever the time period ends up being, of not getting paid.

Screen shot 2013-10-01 at 9.15.54 PMThe way I see it, if the government is shutting down, Congress should definitely not be getting paid – all of them not just the few who have offered to waive their pay.

And, with a shut- down there should at least be some extra days off.

Here was the conversation between Chris and I last night:

Kim:  I think the US military should stage a walk-out if they aren’t going to get paid.
Chris:  That’s against the law.
Kim:  The law made by the same government that is now not paying you?!  Oh – well that seem’s fair completely RIDICULOUS!!!

Obviously I tend to exaggerate things a little since (supposedly) the military will still get paid.

So – yesterday I said I was thankful that Chris still had a job – and I am.  However, I’m not thankful for the way things are being handled in our country right now.  Just my very un-educated point of view on the matter!!!

And, for the record, I think that all government employees should stage a walk-out!!!

Happy Wednesday!

Kim

  1. Love the jumps!! You are rocking those in your skirt mama!!
I agree 100% with you. Congress should absolutely NOT be getting paid. The whole thing is absolutely ridiculous. They should all put their big boy pants on, figure it out and get back to work!!! *end rant here*

    1. Allie, I’ve been wearing my skirts to actually work out this week (instead of just as my normal daily wear – well, I still do that) because I made a comment on Nellie’s guest post about Zumba – I said I always wear fun athletic skirts to Zumba and she mentioned that I only wear shorts on my blog so I’m changing things up. (long explanation to keep me from ranting about the government mess!)

    1. Ashley, I’m with you – I have so many negative thoughts right now!! Stuff like this is why I tend to avoid all news – but when it falls into our front yard I sort of have to pay more attention – I prefer my fantasy world.

    1. Charlotte, I told Hunter this morning that I think if ALL government employees took one day (the same day) off it would shut the entire country down and maybe be an eye-opener to the buffoons who truly do feel entitled to make such poor decisions.

  2. That 44 looks fun, actually, although I’m sure it hurts!

Living near DC, where EVERYONE has some tie in to gov’t. work, I can’t stand this stupid shutdown. Most of my closer friends are essentials and so are still working, but the lighter traffic out there tells you there are plenty who are not getting paid. It’s just nonsense.

    1. I’m sure the DC area is very different right now! The base here is going to get really quiet, too – lots of people are being furloughed today – horrible!
The move was fun – one of those that kind-of sneak up on you after the first 10 or so.

  3. I stay out of commenting on politics as far as I can, so let me just say that viewed from the outside all this seems, well, peculiar.

As for the videos turning yellow: check if your camera has an option to “set white,” meaning you hold a white piece of paper in front of it and it sets RGB values accordingly.

I, btw, always have a tough time getting colors as I want them and it requires some “post-production” work in Premiere Elements to make it look as it should.

  4. Oh, I’m with you about politics..I just can’t even. They’re acting like horrible, horrible children and they should be treated like such – instead of leaders of our sick, sad country.

Anyway, your video is awesome. What are you shooting with?

    1. Tamara, I think saying they are acting like children pretty much sums things up.

You are kind but I know that lately the color has been off on my videos. I usually just use my little Nikon Cool Pix – I have a Nikon 500 (I thinks that what it is but the video on it is really messed up). I’m starting to think it is just user error!!

  5. Andre started ranting about the shutdown last night, and I just said I don’t even want to talk about it. It makes me so angry. I’m sick of all of them. And the fact that they’re still getting paid during all of this? Ugh! Just makes me even sicker.

  6. I’m glad you brought this up Kim! I was debating whether I should wade into the muck on my blog, so I’m glad you’ve given me a platform. No matter which side of the aisle you normally sit, I think we all agree this is absolutely ridiculous and hurting real people with families. Congress, do you friggin job. And, leave my national parks alone!!

  7. Sad to admit but I am pretty ignorant when it comes to politics and such….I just don’t follow it enough to really know what is going on…very bad citizen on my part?! Probably….but, I will say it reminds me of the saying….that I can’t totally remember but goes something like this….”We never really know what goes on behind closed doors”

I think that is true with most jobs, neighbors, families, celebrities, etc…its easy to make a judgement based on our partial knowledge but we never really know unless inside. Even for those with depression or a sickness….how do we know how one really feels when they appear fine to look at. *crazy*

    1. Kathy, I usually don’t pay any attention to political stuff but this one is way too close to home for me to do my usual “ignore and it doesn’t exist” routine. It was a rough day for a lot of friends and co-workers of Chris!!!

  8. Not only take away the paychecks from Congress, but also make it ILLEGAL for any of them to receive $ for campaign donations on the side from lobbies and interest groups that pay them to represent their interests. um, what about the interests of the rest of the country? It is a sad world right now when both DC and big corporate interests have 10x as much power as the people.

    1. Amy, we were talking to the boys about that very thing when they got home from school. So much corruptness due to money!!!
And, I just wrote in another response – one of the local congress people made a big deal (and so did local media) about being willing to give up her paycheck. All these people act like she is doing such a great thing – nope!!! They shouldn’t be getting paid right now while so many others (who have no control and power) aren’t!!!
Kim recently posted…“It’s Against the Law”My Profile

  9. Ugh, I hear you. It makes me sick, too. I’m so disappointed that our leaders have so much trouble making compromises and working together, and instead negatively affect the people who really need the paychecks and have nothing to do with the party battles. :(

    1. Yep – pretty rough day at the base here – over 200 people (who had no choice) have been furloughed – could still be more. Many of these people are enlisted and live paycheck to paycheck so this will be a major hardship.
Kim recently posted…“It’s Against the Law”My Profile

    1. Carly, I don’t know how any of this even makes sense to the members of congress?!

I made a list of over 400 moves/exercises before I started my first year (43s) and I have added many through the blogs I read and the various DVDs I do. I think I have more than enough to get through the year of 44s and then we will see what happens. Feel free to share anytime you have a new/unique/creative move or idea!!! I love to try new things!

  10. I totally agree that the furloughs are ridiculous. I also believe completely that the people who voted to put this in place should not be paid as long as the govt. workers are not.

We were furloughed for 5 days one year. On a teacher salary losing 5 days of pay was detrimental. However, just like in this case all the higher ups, who make way more than we do, still got paid.
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero recently posted…Less Than A MonthMy Profile

    1. Abby, I was explaining to my younger son that very thing – in both government and education the people in charge (who make by far the most) are never the ones affected by losing pay. I used to be a teacher – losing any days of pay was not good!!!
Kim recently posted…“It’s Against the Law”My Profile

  11. As you are aware, I don’t follow the news. This is completely ridiculous. As if Congress doesn’t get paid too much already and now they are risking the pay of other people while they continue to draw pay??? Nice, right? I swear I’m moving to Canada one day.

I cannot believe you did 44 of that! I’m tired!

  12. I am floored that Congress (and other gov’t offices) are still getting paid through this mess. It’s sickening and embarrassing. I can’t say, “Proud to be an American” right now. I really can’t.

  13. Love the move! Congress should definitely not get paid if all other federal employees are not! In California, when the budget was not passed on time, both legislative houses (assembly and senate) didn’t receive a paycheck. Why can’t congress do the same? My husband was furloughed two years ago (he works for the state of CA) and it was awful. We got through it, but I was not a happy camper! My husband definitely took it better than I did.

    1. Melissa, living in the capital (of KS) we have seen state employees (and known lots of them) who have been furloughed – I always hate it for them. Yesterday at Chris’ base – they had to furlough over 200 people and a lot of the ones that were furloughed live paycheck to paycheck – it will be rough.
Chris always takes stuff like this better than me – I tend to spout off and just be mad!!

  14. Yes, I can see all those politicians offering to do without their money. If it’s anything like here they’d sooner chew off a limb than offer to give up any money or entitlements.

  15. Oh my darn! lady, I think that move should be renamed to “flying” jack.lol I think my old bones might have to pass on this one. I love the running part though..although not I’m curious to see how it will feel. (Ok, gonna try it :) ) I’m in total agreement with you about congress and the military. it should be illegal to work without pay…unless you agree to volunteer. ijs…

  16. I totally want to try your 44 move, mostly because I’m curious how many I could do before I fell down. Pretty sure I wouldn’t get to 44. =)

My husband is a gov’t contractor and a TON of my friends are currently not being paid, so I’m pretty sure you know where I stand on this whole gov’t shutdown bullshit. =(

  17. Yay for the skirt!! So cute!

I think you share the opinion of all of America at this point so your opinion is very educated. I also agree with you, congress is outrageous, and this stand off is getting old, quick. These are the times where I feel powerless because they (government) have all the power!

The stand-off is getting very old – hopefully they have some resolution by tomorrow or it will hit even closer to home for us!!!
