Going for It!

I quit working (teaching and coaching) after Jordan was born and spent 9 years as a SAHM.  When both boys were in school I worked in the office at their elementary school and it was a fun job but not a career.

In August of 2013, Chris and I bought a business – The Governor’s Row House – an event venue.  The first year was a huge learning curve for me since I didn’t have any idea how to run a business.

Then my business partner (and life partner!!!) promoted to  Colonel and the Vice Wing Commander (2nd in charge) of the base here.  Awesome for sure but it meant less time for Chris to be able to help with the venue.

I spent a number of months really struggling.

I thought that if we owned a venue it should be the best one around. However, after going through Tara‘s workshop (Stuck to Unstoppable) I realized that my new goal was just to do the best job I could with the venue and that took a ton of pressure off of me.

Now, I have some new goals and plans!!  But instead of just thinking about stuff I can do or just talking about them, I’m taking steps toward seeing those goals become a reality.

It is a little scary because there are definitely risks involved and there will be some steps that are WAY outside of my comfort zone.  However, I’m super excited that for the first time in MANY years, I’m taking action and going for something big!!!

I do have big plans and I’m going for it even though it might be hard and it might be stressful and it might take some time!!

So, I’m going for it and the plan is to have a 2nd business that compliments our wedding venue and allows me to use some of my life experiences (besides cleaning and ironing!).

What are you going for these days?!

Happy Monday!!

Living Without Regrets

Screen Shot 2015-04-12 at 8.31.07 PMI think that many of us have some things in our past we regret.

I have made plenty of mistakes in the past but I try to look at all of those as lessons learned.Screen Shot 2015-04-12 at 8.29.12 PM

I don’t want to spend my life stuck in the past or regretting the mistakes I made when I was younger or even the mistakes I made last week!!

Screen Shot 2015-04-12 at 8.28.43 PM

The other type of regret we often have is over things we didn’t do.  I think those are sometimes harder to move past.  Some things we can still do but some of the opportunities are completely gone.

Screen Shot 2015-04-12 at 8.28.06 PM

I don’t want to look back and wish I had been kinder to those around me so I will try to always be kind.

I don’t want to look back and wish I had taken more chances in my life so I will look for opportunities to grow and seize them when I can.

Screen Shot 2015-04-12 at 8.40.11 PMWhich type of regret do you think is hardest to live with – the mistakes or the missed opportunities?

Happy Monday!  Here’s to a day with no regrets!!

Not Stuck, Working on Unstoppable

Back in February, after waffling around for awhile I finally signed up for Tara’s (FamilySportLife) workshop – Stuck to Unstoppable.

At the time, I thought that my main goal was to figure out how to get moving and start working on ways to make our venue the “best” venue in Topeka.Screen Shot 2015-04-05 at 8.22.41 PM

I went through the 6 week program and completed the workbook exercises, took part in the group calls (most of them) and really put my effort into the program.

At the same time I was still struggling with a lack of motivation and not really making much progress.

Then, one Saturday morning Tara was sweet and did a make-up call with a few of us.  The way it worked out, it was just her and I chatting (face-to-face) for almost an hour before Sara (who no longer blogs) was able to sit and join in.

During that time Tara helped me admit something that I probably already knew – running the venue is not my dream.

As an added bonus and (because Tara rocks!!!), she gave us each a 30 minute one-on-one session.

So, on a Tuesday night almost 2 weeks ago, Tara and I had our one-on-one session.  And, it was a huge eye opener for me!!!

While we were talking I realized that I don’t enjoy a lot of the tasks I have on my list day after day.  Mostly because those tasks are things I don’t have any clue how to really accomplish.

I finally was able to say (out loud!!) that I don’t really think I have to strive to be the best venue in Topeka – that is just my overly competitive nature talking.

EVERY TIME!!!
EVERY TIME!!!

I just want to do the best that I can do as a venue owner.  Which for me, is offering customer service that goes above and beyond what anyone would expect!

Screen Shot 2015-04-05 at 8.39.34 PMI love the interactions I have with all (most!) of our clients and want to do everything in my power to make their special day (birthday, wedding, anniversary, business meeting…..) the very best it can be.

I also love helping people when they call about an event – even if I’m already booked I will brainstorm other options with them.

I finally realized that by letting go of the “best” notion and just striving to give my ALL to each caller/client I have much less stress and enjoy my job more!

Letting go of so much stress has not only allowed me to enjoy what I do more but also to plan and dream!  And, I have some big plans and dreams -hopefully they will start to take place soon!!!

Have you ever worked with a coach?
Do you have big plans/dreams?

Happy Monday!!
