Smile and the World Smiles with You

Have you ever noticed how much your mood can affect those around you?

I know that just with my family if one person is cranky it can bring everyone down in a hurry!!!

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 5.45.37 AM

I think that it is even more like that around groups of people – for some reason one negative person can get the entire group down!

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 5.44.50 AM

I truly think that sometimes we can trick ourselves into being in a better mood than we really are  just by smiling.

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 5.39.17 AM

The best thing about smiling is when others return your smile!!  It’s amazing how good the simple act of being smiled at can make us feel.

This week I’m going to play a little game (because I’m competitive and games make me happy!) and see if I can smile first at every single person I encounter!!!

So, if you’re reading this, know I’m smiling at you even though we might be far apart!!!

Happy Monday – I hope your day is full of smiles!!

BOSU Fun (4/13 – 4/19)

This week the daily 44s were all about my favorite piece of equipment –

After 44 on my right leg, I had to switch feet and do another set!!

The pictures were actually after Hunter and I did his first 60 minute run!!!  We ended up doing 61 minutes so we could do an even 6 miles!!!  For the run we did a 5 minute run/1 minute walk cycle and he did great!!!

Monday 4/14 – 44 tricep dips on upside down BOSU.

By the 25th rep my arms were shaking – 44 of this move was no joke!!!

And, I decided to run a marathon!!  Actually, I wanted to get in a long run of 2-3 hours.  When I got close to 3 hours I thought I would keep going to 25 miles and then I decided to just go to 26.2!!!

26.2 miles – 3:40.57   + 0.8 easy miles

Tuesday 4/15 – 44 push-ups with one arm on the BOSU.

And, of course, I had to do 44 more with my right arm on the BOSU.

(I know I have on the same clothes from Monday’s pictures – Chris took the pictures on Monday morning before he left to go out of town for a few days!!)

I only did 22-24 on each side on my toes and the rest were on my knees.

I wanted to do an easier workout since my legs were tired from Monday so I did Poise-Core Training.  It was a lot like pilates and a nice 45 minute workout!!

After school, I ran with the boys – 30 minutes (we did 3.25 miles) and then walked 0.25 miles.  The first couple minutes were rough and I almost stopped but by the end I was happy I had gone with them.

Wednesday 4/16 – 44 side leg abduction on BOSU.

This was another one of those moves that I had to do one set of 44 and then switch sides to do another set!

I tried to hold each lift for a couple seconds and then control my leg on the way down – my base leg was shaky!!!

And, since the week was already about the BOSU, I did a couple of BOSU DVDs –  BOSU Balance Trainer and BOSU Reactive Strength & Power.  Both of these workouts had a mix of cardio, strength moves and some core work!!

Thursday 4/17 – 44 crunches on BOSU.

The start position was nice because it was a good back stretch!!

It wasn’t a big crunch (otherwise I would have rolled off!) but it was very effective!

And, I ran again!!  8 miles (63:03) + 0.5 easy miles.

Friday 4/18  – 44 BOSU butt bridges.

I liked this move – I don’t think I work my hamstrings as much as I should but this move definitely did the trick!

I did a fun DVD – Cross Training for Fitness.  It is a lot of kickboxing with some great core work thrown in.

Hunter and I also ran.  It was a 35 minute run but we ended up coin 36:51 so we could finish our 4th mile.  Hunter is doing a great job with his training – so far he is still enjoying it and I love the time we spend running together!!!

Saturday 4/19 – 44 squats with a twist (holding a medicine ball) on upside down BOSU.

I did all 44 to the right side and then switched and did 44 more.

You can look back at the week and see that I did several moves with the BOSU upside down.  If you have never tried using the BOSU this way, you should!!  The balance challenge is incredible!!!

There are so many ways to use a BOSU – I think I will have to pick another week soon to focus on it again!!!

Weekly mileage 47.45 + 1.55 easy miles for a total of 49 miles.

Happy Saturday!!!  Have a great Easter weekend!

What Matters Most

This week has been a different kind of week for me.

Screen Shot 2014-04-18 at 7.07.07 AM

I started the week running a marathon on my treadmill since I had extra time Monday morning and needed to get in a long run!!

Chris had to leave for a few days of simulator training so it was just the boys and me.  When they boys were little and Chris had a trip it was always rough but now the boys and I  have a good time together because even though I’m their Mom, I’m also their friend!!!

Tuesday I had a work meeting and then I got to meet Amy (Run | Write | Hike) and Shrek and Zoe!!!  She was driving through on her way back to Colorado after spending the weekend in Pennsylvania and let me know that she would be passing through.  We met at a park with a nice dog park so the dogs could run while we talked – awesome to meet her!!

my poor attempt at getting a picture!
my poor attempt at getting a picture!

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between working out, being with the boys and doing stuff for work (showings and cleaning/set-up), I have spent a lot of time with a friend who is going through a really rough time right now.  Usually I see her once a week in the evening because she is at work during the day but this week has been different and we have spent lots of time together – lunch, the mall, just hanging out!

Screen Shot 2014-04-18 at 7.17.15 AMYesterday evening, Chris and I got to meet up with some other good friends for drinks (and dinner) – it was super fun to catch up with them again before we had to run off for evening activities (getting Hunter to cello group and  PTO).

Today the boys are out of school (Monday, too!) so that will be nice to have them around more!!!

The local YWCA is having their big fundraiser for the battered women’s shelter tonight at our venue – an art auction.  And we get to go!!!

so maybe not quite like this but....
so maybe not quite like this but….

Tomorrow will be another cleaning/set-up day since we have a super cute couple getting married on Easter Sunday!!!

And we are having some good friends over for dinner – steaks on the grill!!!

So, this week I haven’t spent nearly as much time reading blogs (and I really do love reading and commenting on all y’all’s blogs!!!) but I have spent time with friends and my family doing….

Screen Shot 2014-04-18 at 7.27.59 AMI love spending time with my blog friends  and it was a little odd to not read a single blog yesterday.  (I’m sort of scared to open my BlogLovin this morning!!!)

Screen Shot 2014-04-18 at 7.26.23 AMSome days the most important thing is just being available for someone who needs you – maybe it’s a family member, a friend or even a blog friend – we just have to do what matters most each day!

Happy Friday!!

Mediterranean Tortellini Salad

love all the colors!
love all the colors!

I think that Mediterranean flavors might be my favorite – they are so fresh and seem lighter than lots of others (like Mexican!).

When the weather is warmer I love meals that can be made on the stove without heating up the house.  And, nothing says spring like salad!!!

This one was so good!!!

ingredients
ingredients

Ingredients:
1 package frozen cheese tortellini
1 package polish sausage (I used beef), sliced
1 jar prepared pesto (you could make your own – I tend to go the easy route!!)
fresh baby spinach, chopped
red bell pepper, chopped
baby portobello mushrooms, sliced
black olives, sliced
1 can cannelloni beans, drained
feta cheese

Directions:
Cook tortellini according to package directions.  (BTW – so cool how much they plump up!!)

In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium heat for 6-7 minutes (until lightly browned).

perfect spring meal!

The entire family liked this and I have a feeling we will have this one numerous times during the next few months!!!

I think it would be a great side if you made it without the sausage, too.

Trusting or Naive?

Screen Shot 2014-04-15 at 9.31.00 PM

I used to be one of those people that just naturally thought everyone was inherently good.  For the most part, I still try to approach life with that kind of attitude but I’m also a lot more cautious than I used to be.

I had my identity stolen and it has been a complete PAIN trying to get everything straightened out.   The person who decided to be me has all of my information (social security #, phone numbers, address…..) but they changed my name just a bit to set up new accounts (using my info).

Screen Shot 2014-04-15 at 9.27.08 PM

Last night I got a call on my cell phone from a number I didn’t recognize and the lady asked for Kimmely Turner (the person who wants to be me).  I asked her who she was calling for and it was a company that I’ve already filed a fraud report with.

I told her that she had the wrong name and that I had no idea why she would be calling that person.  She said that the name just hadn’t been changed on my account.  What account?!

Screen Shot 2014-04-15 at 9.36.22 PMI explained to her that I did not have an account with them – only some person pretending to be me had an account.  She said she knew that and she just needed to verify some information to finish my fraud account.  (Side note:  I sent in the paper work almost a month ago using my real name and when I called them 2 months+ ago I gave them my correct name!)

She wanted me to tell her my address (to confirm it, you know).

Screen Shot 2014-04-15 at 9.42.19 PMI refused and she told me I could call the customer service number on the back of my card.  I DON’T HAVE A CARD BECAUSE I DON’T HAVE AN ACCOUNT!!!

Anyway, I didn’t give her any information and I didn’t call any numbers last night.  I’m not sure that the fraud department is handling this very well and I have stopped being as trusting as I used to be.

I still try to give people the benefit of the doubt but when it is a “blind” call then I don’t want to be stupid or naive.

Do you tend to trust all people or are you a bit wary of people that you don’t really know?

Happy Wednesday!

Kim
