Is it a Compliment when you add a Qualifier?

Today I did a basic move for my 44 but I added in a challenge by holding an 8 pound medicine ball straight above my head the whole time!  I did alternating forward lunges (a right lunge and left = 1 rep) with the ball overhead.

This move was great because I felt it in my legs, my arms were shaking and I got my heart rate up!!!

I also did one of my 10 Minute Solution DVDs – Sculpt, Tone and Reshape with the Figure 8.

I like the format of this workout – it is a total body workout with toning and some cardio.  Each of the segments goes by very quickly and there are some fun moves!

Have you ever gotten a compliment that you’re not sure if it was really intended to be a compliment?

I’m sure that most everyone has at some point.

My least favorite – “You look good, for your age.”  Why does that last little bit (the qualifier) need to be added on?  That makes me feel like A. I’m old and B. I don’t really look good at all.

Last night while I was getting my hair done, Jennifer (my hair dresser for over 12 years!) told me about a “compliment” she had gotten over the weekend.

She was at a store and had on some new boots and a cute top.  A girl (complete stranger) said, “You could be on a magazine as a plus size model.”

Really?!  She couldn’t have just left that last part off?

I’m sure that I’ve added a qualifier to compliments before but I’m going to start really paying attention to how I word compliments!!!

What compliments have you been given with qualifiers?
Did you still feel like it was a compliment?

Happy Wednesday!!

Use It or Lose It

I decided to use my bands for the 44 today  – I did a leg abduction with the resistance of the bands.

I only did one side for this demo – but you can sort-of see that I stepped on the band with my stationary leg to get the resistance.  Besides working my thighs and hips, this is a great balance challenge (I wobbled a lot and had to tap my toe/foot a lot!).  And, of course, I did 44 with each leg!

Then I pulled out one of my favorite workouts – Les Mills Combat – Combat 60 Live – Ultimate Warrior’s Workout.  This workout is awesome because just when you think your legs can’t handle another rep, you switch over to punching again!!!  The hour flies by in a sweaty blur!!!

Screen shot 2013-11-19 at 6.53.17 AMI’m sure that everyone has heard the phrase “Use it or Lose it” many times before.  I think it’s true in lots areas of our lives – fitness, knowledge, some insurance plans, vacation days…

We all know how hard it is to achieve the level of conditioning/strength that we want to be at and many of us have seen how quickly those gains can deteriorate when we can’t work out because of injury, illness or whatever other reason.

Screen shot 2013-11-19 at 6.51.38 AMI think another area that we can quickly “lose it” is our brain power!!!

Yesterday Jordan was talking about the Trojan War and the guy who suggested that they get in the horse (I can’t remember his name!).  He said, “Didn’t you learn all of this in school?” Ummm…Yes – like 30 years ago!!!  And, I’ve never used it since!

There was a time (in grad school and for a few years after) that I could do a thorough observation of the entire human body, palpating and naming each bone, tendon and ligament as I went.  Now, I can name and identify only a very few of those because it has been 20 years since I really studied and applied all of that knowledge.

Sometimes I look back at all the years I spent in school and wonder how hard it would be to re-learn all that I’ve forgotten.

Screen shot 2013-11-19 at 7.06.19 AM

Maybe I should work on actually using some of the information that I’ve learned over the years so that by the time I’m 70 I have at least a little knowledge of something left!!!

What have you lost because you haven’t used it?  (please tell me I’m not the only one!!!)

Happy Tuesday!!!  I’m going to try to learn and apply at least one thing today!!!

Before and After

Today’s 44 was a great one to work my whole body and I got my heart rate up – bonus!!!

I did a plie while holding a dumbbell (10 pounds) – stood and pressed the DB overhead and to the right while lifting my left heel – lowered to plie – repeated to the left for 1 rep.

The video is super dark because Jordan doesn’t believe in light in the morning – he’s 15!!!

Screen shot 2013-11-15 at 6.51.58 AM2 weeks ago, I walked into a nasty disgusting apartment and had a little freak out!!!

Today we have new tenants moving in!!!!  In a short (BUSY) 2 weeks the apartment has undergone a huge transformation!!!

In the last 2 weeks – we hauled out 2 dumpsters full of stuff plus a couch and several other pieces of furniture, cleaned the nastiness, primed, painted, repaired numerous broken things (good thing Chris is super handy!!), did another cleaning (that’s how gross it was) and hung curtains.

The apartment went from being a place that I couldn’t stand to a super cute apartment with a lot of character!!!

In 2 months, we’ve turned over 2 of the 3 apartments – I hope that we don’t have to do this again any time soon!!!!

Happy Friday!

Memory – Can you Remember what you Forgot?

I used my BOSU for the 44 again (such a fun piece of equipment!!).  Today’s move was all about balance!!!  I did jump squats.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym22a52AGWE’]

Just to say – the video was right after I finished running 10 miles and Jordan said I only got one chance – pretty shaky on those jumps!!!  (That’s why I always do my 44 before the rest of my workout – more strength then!!)

So, the rest of the workout was running – 1.5% incline – 8 miles in 59:55 + 2 more miles at a nice easy pace.  It’s been awhile since I’ve put in that many miles so it was nice to get a long run today!!!

Screen shot 2013-11-07 at 7.07.45 AMDo you have a good memory?

I used to think I did – I never needed a grocery list, I could rattle off phone numbers, when I taught I knew all of the my student’s names (usually 100+) by the 2nd day.

Now it’s a completely different story!!!  When I use something up in the kitchen I can’t even remember to write it on the list (which I have to have!!!).

One day I called someone and ended up leaving a message for them to call me back – I said the first 3  numbers of my phone # and went completely blank on the rest!!!  Duh….

Screen shot 2013-11-07 at 7.08.07 AMWhen the boys ask me about doing something later in the day or for the next day I usually tell them sure but they will need to remind me!  (They don’t get that at all!!!)

I know that there are tricks for helping your memory but I can’t even remember what they are!!!

Screen shot 2013-11-07 at 7.09.13 AMYep – that’s pretty much how I feel most of the time.  I have to write everything down (in my calendar!) or there is very little chance that I will remember.

I guess I better never misplace my calendar because I would never remember where I put it!!!

Do you struggle to remember simple things?  Does it bug you?

I have to be honest – it causes me stress – good thing the stress doesn’t last long since I can’t remember what it is that’s bothering me!!!

Happy Thursday!

Kim

Strength Days – Cardio Days – Combo Days

Today’s 44 was fun – one of my favorite moves in a new way!!  I love deadlifts and today I did a sumo deadlift (legs wider then hip width with toes slightly turned out) – go down one leg, while down (back flat) rotate torso slowly over to other leg and come up – reverse the move – once you are back at the starting position you have completed 1 rep.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvH8qySj_q8′]

This 44 took awhile just because it is a move that has to be done slow and controlled to avoid injury.  I’m pretty sure that tomorrow I will feel this in my hamstrings and glutes!!!

I did another Jari Love DVD today – Get Extremely Ripped – Boot Camp.  This was about an hour and 10 minutes of hard work!!!  The segments alternated between combo moves for the upper and lower body with weights, cardio blasts (3 minutes each), ab work – basically some of everything in a nonstop workout.  It was awesome!!!

Screen shot 2013-11-04 at 6.57.36 AM

While I was working out this morning I started thinking about my workouts and how much they have changed over the years.

About 10 years ago, all I did was run.  No weights, no cross-training of any sort, no toning/strengthening exercises – just running.  And I was injured a LOT!!!

It finally got to the point where I knew that I couldn’t keep running every day but I still wanted to work out so I started trying new things – lifting (P90X, the Get Ripped series, Chalean Extreme), Insanity, Turbo Fire, Jillian Michaels workouts, even some Pilates and Yoga!!!

I used to alternate days between weight training

Screen shot 2013-11-04 at 7.03.59 AMand running

Screen shot 2013-11-04 at 7.05.24 AM

and that worked for awhile.

Then, I went back to working full time and had to fit my workout in between 4:30 and 6:00 am.  And I discovered how great combo workouts can be!!

Screen shot 2013-11-04 at 7.07.05 AMThere are still days that I only run and there are some days that I don’t do any cardio – just a hard weight workout.

But, my favorite workouts are those that integrate weights and cardio (like the one I did this morning!).

So, what do you prefer – keeping your strength and cardio separate or workouts that mix the two?  Or do you skip weights completely?

Happy Monday!!!  (wish me luck – I’m off to tackle the nasty apartment!)
