Final Fun Friday of 2012

Fun Friday – my favorite!!!

Today was a fun day overall – home with the boys (and I even convinced them to play a couple of games with me!!). Snowflakes that didn’t amount to anything -yay!!!  Party machine!

Party Machine!!!!
Party Machine!!!!

I made a big pot of chicken tortilla soup and we had friends over to break in the new drink machine tonight!  This thing totally rocks – you can put in either rum, vodka or tequila and get 15-20 different drink options with the juice and sour mix – so AWESOME!!!!!

(You can hear Jordan in the background – he is our rule-following  boy!!!)  You can push the ‘I feel lucky’ button and let the machine pick your drink  or spin the dial to your choice – AWESOME!!!  Sad thing – I quit recording a couple seconds too early and you don’t get to see the cheers at the end of the drink pour.

Fun times with good friends! Warm and toasty house = Fun Friday to the max!!!

Hanukkah

Last night we went to some friends house for a Hanukkah party.  It was a lot of fun and very neat to learn more of the tradition and story behind the celebration.

The first thing I learned is that there is really no such thing as a “traditional” menorah.  Who knew?  They can look like this with bright colored candles:Screen shot 2012-12-16 at 9.45.06 AMOr like this:Screen shot 2012-12-16 at 9.45.35 AM

Or this sweet pink car:Screen shot 2012-12-16 at 9.46.12 AMOr this:Screen shot 2012-12-16 at 9.46.59 AM

I also didn’t realize that a family might have (and light) more than one.  They do!  Actually, each family member has their own.

The story behind the lighting of the menorah is really fascinating!  Way back (over 2000 years ago) in a Jewish temple there was a lantern that was supposed to burn all the time.  However, once they only had a very small amount of oil left and it would take 8 days to make more oil.  They chose to keep the lantern lit until it burned out while they made more oil.  The funny thing is, the lantern did not burn out during the entire 8 days.

So, there are 8 days of Hanukkah with a candle representing each day (plus a center candle – I forgot what that one is called – but it is used to light the others).  On the first day, you put in the first candle and light it.  You leave it burning until it burns down.  On the 2nd day, you put in 2 candles and do the same.  On the 8th day (yesterday), you fill the menorah and light all 8.

Hanukkah can be any time between late November and very early January – it depends on the Jewish (I think) calendar.

Another thing I learned is about the food that is generally eaten at Hanukkah – lots of fried stuff.  The reason is to represent the oil that did not run out.

Latkes (a potato pancake) are common

There are also chocolates – especially gold coins.  Last night our host also had several types of quiche, salad and bread – all good stuff!

After the meal, all of the kids played a rousing game of dreidel.Screen shot 2012-12-16 at 10.02.42 AM

I’m not sure how that was played (I was talking, not watching) but I know that there was lots of laughing and more candy was involved!!!

I’m sure that some of my details are a little off – this is just based on what I took in and my memory (which is poor to begin with plus the fact that I drank wine during the party) so probably not 100% accurate.

Our entire family really enjoyed getting to experience this celebration with friends!

Family Pictures

Every year we take pictures for our Christmas card (and to hang on the picture wall).  I love to look back at the pictures and see the changes (mostly just in the boys unless you count my hair color).

Here are some of the ones that didn’t make the cut this year.

Looking good Jordan
Not bad
Eyes closed – really?
Jordan!!!
Jordan!!!!!

Jordan spent a lot of the pictures entertaining himself (and later us when we looked at all of the pictures)!  We did get some pictures that I liked.

Not bad
I like this one!
My Favorite!!

Even though sometimes it is a hassle to get everyone coordinated (or in this case, matching!!!), I’m always glad that we have these pictures to remember each stage our lives!!!

The Return of FUN FRIDAY!!!

Ahhh…..I love Fun Friday!!!

Tonight’s martini is so simple – 3 ingredients:  orange vodka & cranberry pomegranate juice in equal parts and a splash of lime juice.

The fun part is the mixing.

A couple of years ago, Chris was deployed and missed  Thanksgiving (here with us).  Sam (my younger brother) and his family came up from Texas.  Stacy (my sister-in-law) and I always have a great time together.  We found this AWESOME martini maker while shopping one day and since my martini maker (Chris) was gone – I NEEDED it!!!  (It really doesn’t take much to make me happy!)  Stacy and I brought it home and made the exact martinis that I’m drinking tonight!

Tonight’s martini glass is one of my first, I think (who can remember?!).

5 O’Clock Somewhere

The only thing that would make this Friday more fun is if Stacy were here having a martini with me!!!

Enjoy your Fun Friday!!!
