My Heart Is Overflowing

Sometimes there just aren’t words to express the depth of my emotions – this weekend was one of times!!!

All of the hard work of last week and lost sleep was worth it to enjoy every second of the time with my family celebrating Chris’ big day!!!!

I’m beyond thankful to my family and Chris’ family and some of our very dear friends for coming to the ceremony and then helping us celebrate at the party!!!

My family and some of Chris’ spent almost as much time traveling during the weekend as time here with us.  Having them help celebrate made the day even more special!!!

I know how busy everyone is these days and the fact that our families basically dropped everything for a couple of days means more to me than anything.

Also, our friends who changed plans, worked around existing schedules and made it a priority to help celebrate with Chris are the greatest!!!

Even with everything going on (cooking and planning a party for 150+), hosting my family, going to Hunter’s final cross country meet…..I enjoyed every second of this past weekend!!!

I needed the time I normally spend blogging last week to prepare for the weekend and I’m happy that I took that time but I’m also happy to be back to normal blogging (and reading!!!) this week.

Happy Monday!!!

Family – First Forever!!

I write about my boys and Chris a lot because they make up my world!!!

Besides these 3 boys who I love with every fiber of my being, I also love my siblings!!!

Because all 3 of them live in Texas it is rare that we are all together.  In the last 10 years the only times we have all been together have been for sad occasions  – Mema’s funeral 4 years ago, Poppa’s funeral last fall and when my dad had a heart attack about a year and a half ago.

But…..this coming weekend we will all be together for a happy occasion!!!

Tim (my twin) and my dad are flying up Saturday morning.
Sam (6 years younger) and Stacy are driving all day Friday (12 hours each way) to be here Friday night through Saturday night and then they will drive through the night Saturday night to get home.
Mandi (my sister) is driving up (7 hours each way) with her sweet 5 month old (Griffin) Friday and will turn around and drive back on Sunday.

I’m very much looking forward to all of us being together even though it is for a super short time!!!

They are all coming to help celebrate Chris’ promotion  (the promotion ceremony is Saturday afternoon).

I can’t even put into words how much it means that they are all taking time out of their lives to come up this weekend!!!  And, the best news is that every one of them told me on my birthday – pretty great  present!!!

Chris is worried that I will be a basket case by the time the party gets here since I’m getting our house and venue ready for family and friends and doing all the food.  I told him that this week will be all about sticking to my lists ( I’m all about check lists!!!) and making sure I get things done in advance so I can enjoy my family and Chris’ big day!!!

I will probably take a small break in blogging just to make the week more manageable.

How often do you get together with your extended family?

Happy Monday!

You Can’t Undo the Past

Hunter had a cross country meet Wednesday afternoon and it didn’t go quite the way he was hoping it would – after the race he was not happy with himself.

As a mom (and runner) it is hard to see him so upset and down on himself  over a race that didn’t go according to his plan.

Tuesday after school and throughout the evening Hunter was talking about how difficult the course was going to be for the race Wednesday (they ran it last year).  I told him to quit psyching himself out.Screen Shot 2014-09-25 at 9.01.33 PM

When I got to the park for the meet, Hunter seemed in good spirits.  I watched the 7th girls, 7th boys, 8th girls and then it was time for Hunter’s race – 8th boys.

7th grade did 1 mile and 8th ran 2 miles (they did the same loop 2x).

Hunter started off slower than he has been running (behind boys he has been beating this year).  I ran to a few places to cheer for Hunter and the others.  When they started the 2nd loop I told Hunter it was time to start going.

The last time I saw him was a little less than 1/2 a mile from the end and then with about 200m to go – both times I told him to pick it up.

He ended up getting passed in the final few steps when he is normally the one passing others.

Hunter was not happy so I gave him some time to gather himself but once we got in the car to drive home (over an hour) we talked some about the race and his attitude.

He said he wouldn’t be able to stop beating himself up over how poorly he ran.  I asked him if he had been struggling while running.  NOPE.  He was worried about the hills and how difficult the course was so he wasn’t running his hardest.

Screen Shot 2014-09-25 at 9.07.10 PM

I asked him if being so hard on himself would change the outcome of the race.  NOPE!

Screen Shot 2014-09-25 at 9.10.58 PM

I told him that this was one of those things he just had to chalk up to lessons learned and move on.

He learned that he is much stronger than he thinks and he shouldn’t doubt is strength (or me when I tell him to go!!!).

We talked about the meet on Friday (crazy that they race just 2 days later but….) and the fact that it is a much flatter easier course so he can go out and run the way he knows he is capable of.

Mostly I told him that we can’t live in the past – we have to keep moving forward and not let past mistakes slow us down.

Hopefully Hunter is able to put a bad (it wasn’t really bad except in his mind) race behind him and move on!!

Do you beat yourself up for days or just take the lessons and move on?

Happy Friday!!

You Know What?

It always makes me laugh when people say – “You know what?”  Umm….NO – what?????

When the boys were several years younger this was how many of our conversations started – not gonna lie, I found it really frustrating!!

So….YOU KNOW WHAT?

Yesterday I gave myself a couple free hours – I had my laptop, a blanket and a movie – Screen Shot 2014-09-23 at 9.04.15 PM

During the week I usually feel like I have to be doing something all the time so it was nice to just hang out and enjoy this movie!!!

YOU KNOW WHAT?

I went to Barnes & Noble to look for a couple of books that I knew Chris would like.  They didn’t have them in the store but somehow I ended up bringing home a couple of new cookbooks because I’m not sure I have enough 😆

Maybe 1/3 of my cookbooks - I have a small problem!!

YOU KNOW WHAT?

I have been enjoying the tasty wine that Chris brought me from Germany – it has been my favorite wine for years!!!!Screen Shot 2014-09-23 at 9.09.17 PM

YOU KNOW WHAT?

I have the hardest time baking or broiling meat – for some reason I can’t get the timing right.  Last night I did broiled chicken thighs/legs and it took much longer than the recipe said (they were really large but….).  So, we ate the sides first and then the chicken – nice!!!

YOU KNOW WHAT?

Some mornings 5:00 am comes really early – I think that part of the problem is I stay up later than I should and then I don’t sleep through the night.  Oh, well – sleep is overrated!!!

How would you follow a “you know what?” today?

Happy Wednesday!!!

Today Is a Good Day for a Good Day

My 2 favorite TV channels are HGTV and Food Network.  If I just want background noise during the day I usually have one of those channels on.

One of the shows I enjoy on HGTV is Fixer Upper with Chip and Joanna Gaines.  (The fact that they live in Texas, near Waco, is a bonus!!!)

On one episode Joanna had a special saying made into wall art –

Screen Shot 2014-09-21 at 8.41.20 PM

I love that idea because really every day is a good day for a good day!!!

I know that not all days are sunshine and roses but at least we don’t have to deal with this – Screen Shot 2014-09-21 at 8.46.49 PM

or at least I hope not!!!

Even the bad days and hard experiences are usually temporary and then we come back around to the good days.Screen Shot 2014-09-21 at 8.58.59 PM

I hope that today truly is a good day for a good day in your world!!!

Happy Monday!
