HaHa – pretty much exactly how I feel when I go to Zumba!!

Screen Shot 2014-07-11 at 5.22.23 AM

This is what Hunter thinks about some of the workout DVDs I have.  He can’t stand it when the people smile the entire time because he says they aren’t working hard enough!!

Yep!!!  Although, I also have to lift weights and do other activities now, too!!!

I have done this many times – especially when we are almost home from a long road trip.  Those last 30ish miles that are so long in the car I just keep telling myself I could run them!!!

Happy Friday!!

I Messed Up!!!

Sometimes I really mess up!!! Thankfully, my boys are kind and willing to give me 2nd, 3rd and 1000th chances!!!

Monday  I took Jordan to the DMV to get his restricted license (the one that will allow him to drive to school and work by himself!).Screen Shot 2014-07-09 at 5.21.22 AM

I was super excited to show up and find out the wait was going to be less than 15 minutes!!!  A lot of times it is a couple hours!!!

The man at the front desk called Jordan over and asked him if he had his “gold” slip.  I had no idea what he was talking about!!!

Last summer Jordan took Drivers Ed – the class, test and instructional driving hours.  Apparently, at the end of the class he received a pink slip (that showed he took the class)Screen Shot 2014-07-09 at 5.21.51 AM and a gold slip (which showed he completed it).Screen Shot 2014-07-09 at 5.22.23 AM

Umm….we had to bring a piece of paper from a year ago?!

Fortunately, the guy told us we could go to the driving school and pay for another one!!!

I was not happy!!!  We had to wait over 30 minutes just for someone to show up, pay, then go back to the DMV.

I told Jordan that he needed to do a better job keeping up with stuff. I also made him pay for the reissue slip since I paid for the course last year!!!

We finally got the license!Screen Shot 2014-07-09 at 5.17.21 AM

That evening I was telling Chris all about the morning – including the lecture I gave Jordan and the fact that I was impatient and he was pleasant the entire time.

Then, just out of curiosity, I looked at my desk.  Guess what was in almost plain sight??????DSCN1572If you guessed the missing gold slip – the one that I blamed Jordan for not keeping up with – you would be correct!!!

I felt horrible!!!

I apologized to Jordan (and paid him back!!!).  He was super nice about it and said it wasn’t a big deal and he didn’t mind the whole process anyway.

How did I get so lucky?!

Even today, 2 days later, I still feel bad.  I learned a lesson from Jordan both in patience and forgiveness!!!

Please tell me that you’ve done something similar!!!

Happy Wednesday!

Is it Possible to go from Loving Heat to Being Heat Intolerant?

I have always been one of those people who loves summer and heat!!!Screen Shot 2014-07-06 at 5.09.09 PMHowever, in the past couple of months I’ve started noticing that my body doesn’t tolerate heat the way it used to.

I used to be able to  lay out for hours without ever getting in the pool!!  The summer I was pregnant with Jordan, a good friend and I spent many hours together at the pool.  She was always amazed at how seldom I got in the pool.

And, running in the middle of the afternoon on 100+ days in west TX never phased me.   Many of my runs happened in blazing temps all the way through my 20s.  (Then I wised up a bit.)

Screen Shot 2014-07-06 at 5.08.55 PM

Back in May, the day of my 50 mile race the temperature climbed into the mid-upper 80s during the race.  I truly thought that my body was handling the temperature and sun OK and that I was staying hydrated.

Until, it wasn’t!!!  I still don’t know if I had  heat exhaustion or what but when I quit sweating, felt dizzy and sort of cold even with the temperature I knew that wasn’t right.

my favorite

I know I’ve mentioned many times that the beach is my happy place.  But, this summer I’ve done most of my laying out on our back deck with a big fan blowing on me because I can’t handle the heat!!!

Friday, the boys and I did the 6 mile race around our lake.

Jordan is right behind me in the light gray

I struggled the entire race and even though the pace was slow for me, when I finished, I thought (for the first time in all my years of running!!!) that I was going to puke!!!

I actually felt crummy and had a hard time taking deep breaths for several hours after the race.

I know that I’m at an age where my body is changing some and that might affect my heat tolerance.  I still love summer but the heat and direct sun are better in small doses and not when running!!!

Has anyone else experienced major changes in how their body handles heat?  Do you know why?

Happy Monday!!

Fire and Smoke

I don’t know how things work in other places but where we live fireworks go on sale exactly a week before the 4th of July.  So for 1 week we set off fireworks on the driveway almost every night!!!

The boys like to get plastic buckets from the Dollar Store and set them on fire – as a result, we have permanent marks of each 4th of July!!!

Tonight will be epic for us because Hunter has not 1 but 2 16,000 rolls of fireworks!!!  Last year he lit an 8,000 roll and it was pretty exciting but I think this will really be incredible!!!

Here are some pictures from the week so far.

We have enjoyed our evenings – neighbors come over and we all hang out!!  This truly is my favorite time of the year!!

Tonight we will have friends over for dinner and lots of super fun fireworks – the ones we do and the display that the lake puts on off the dam –  can’t wait!!

Do you light fireworks?

Happy 4th of July!

We Aren’t Guaranteed Another Day – We Should Cherish Every Second We Have

Screen Shot 2014-07-01 at 7.46.35 PMA couple weeks ago I mentioned some friends going through a rough time.  I couldn’t say a lot  then because they were keeping things quiet.

Now, I can say a little more.

A good friend and colleague of Chris’ (they have known each other about 28 years) just said a permanent good-bye to his wife (who Chris has also  known since they were in late grade school).

After experiencing extreme vertigo for about a month, Drs realized that there was more going on and started doing some tests.  4 weeks ago she was admitted to the hospital while they tried to figure out what was going on.

One early  possibility was a form of encephalitis which does have a treatment option that could possibly reverse some of the damage.

However, 2 weeks ago, she was officially diagnosed with sporadic CJD – a fatal disease with no cure and no treatment.

Our friend was faced with the heart breaking task of telling his kids that their mom was going to die soon.  (The kids are 14 & 16.)

Her decline was rapid and Sunday evening she took her very last breath – thankfully it was not painful for her.

4 weeks ago a young woman (she turned 43 the day after being admitted to the hospital) – a wife, mom, daughter, sister and friend – went into the hospital just expecting to have a few tests done, a diagnosis and then to go home feeling better.  Neither she nor her family had any idea that she would never go home again.

Screen Shot 2014-07-01 at 8.03.08 PM

This was a huge wake-up call for me!  I don’t want something like this to cause me to feel regrets for things I didn’t make the priority that I should have.

I know that I’m guilty of putting things off and saying – “tomorrow” or “soon” but I’m not guaranteed tomorrow.  I am going to take this brutal life lesson and make sure that I take advantage of all the nows in my life!!!

Happy Wednesday!!  Cherish your friends and family today and every day!!!
