Resting and Running (9/7-9/13)

This week was mostly about 44s and resting!!

Sunday 9/7 44 cross body obliques (standing) – knee to elbow.

I tried to stay balanced on one leg the entire time I was doing this move – sort of a challenge!!  And, I had to do the other side!

I like moves like this – and I love that Jordan is doing homework in the background without a shirt!!!

I did an easy 4 mile run just to shake my legs out a bit!!!

Monday 9/8  44 crunches while laying on the foam roller.

This move was sort of nice on the down part as a stretch!!!

Tuesday 9/9  44 chest fly in crunch position with a band.  This move is one I adapted from Stuft Mama.

Basically I just opened my arms to the side and then up in front while holding my core tight the entire time!!

Wednesday 9/10  44 side lying scissors with legs.

I counted a right leg on top and right leg back as 1 rep.  This move really worked my hips because I kept my legs off the ground the entire time.

And, of course, I had to flip over and get the other side!!

And, I ran a race – The Patriot’s Run.Screen Shot 2014-09-13 at 6.39.33 AM

I didn’t get my goal (50 miles) but I run over a marathon and then called it a day (thoughts on the race on Monday!).

Friday 9/12  44 seated leg extensions.

This 44 almost didn’t happen.  Chris and I had to go to Wichita to get stuff for his uniform at the BX and then I sort of forgot.  Better to get it done at 10:00 pm than never!!!

Saturday 9/13  44 3 part stretch.

Ouch!!!

I did this early this morning before we left for Hunter’s very cold cross country meet which is why I have on about 3 layers of clothes!!  The stretch was just what I needed after running Thursday and spending over 4 hours in the car on Friday.

Happy Saturday!!!  (cold here – I hope this isn’t a sign of the coming winter weather!!)

Trying to Put an End to the Self Doubt

The past couple of days I’ve been in a bit of a funk and a lot of the reason is because of all the negative garbage in my head.

Screen Shot 2014-09-09 at 8.51.14 PM

I’m doubting my ability to finish an ultra and I’m trying to put an end to that doubt.  I know I’ve trained.  I’ve tried to rest – not easy and not my normal!

The fact that I’ve started a 50 mile race not once but twice and still haven’t completed it isn’t helping my mindset.

But, this race isn’t a 50.  It is a timed race – since it is on 9/11 it is 9 hours 11 minutes (starting at noon and ending at 9:11 pm).  The fact that I’m hoping to run 50 miles (or more) in that time  is probably what has me all tied in knots!!!

There are lots of differences between this race and the 50 I’ve attempted in the past.  For starters, it is not on a rock road full of hills –

mile 33.5
mile 33.5

I won’t be running by myself in the middle of nowhere either!!!

This race is a small loop (0.67 miles) around a park – Screen Shot 2014-09-09 at 8.59.59 PM

There will be other runners all day (there is a half and marathon besides the ultra) plus friends, family and volunteers all around the course!!!

The weather is looking awesome – high of 66 and partly cloudy!!  So much better than the 90 degree temps that we have had recently!!

Now, I just need to stop doubting myself and get out there and do what I love – Screen Shot 2014-09-09 at 9.03.15 PM

What do you do to overcome self doubt?

Happy Wednesday!!!

Randomness

The other day Deb at Deb Runs tagged me to do a Random Fact Post – 10 Random Facts.   I asked for some input from Chris and the boys for my random facts because I sort of feel like I’ve shared a lot – they just sort of rolled their eyes – RUDE!!!

So, here are some random facts that you might not know about me.

1.  Even though most of the pictures I post on here are me in workout clothes, I actually wear “real” clothes most days, too.

2.  When I was growing up, my mom used to make me wear dresses/skirts only (no pants, jeans or shorts) – I hated it.  Now in the summer I prefer dresses!!!

3.  I refuse to buy green peas – even when the boys where babies it was one of the few baby foods they never had.  I hate everything about peas – the color, the smell, the texture and the taste!!!

4.  I don’t believe in throwing up!!!

5.  I am a minimalist with make-up – a little mascara and some lipstick and I’m set!!

6.  In college, I had long hair (which I kept spiraled permed) and I always pulled it back into a ponytail with a large bow.  In fact, I usually got special bows for big races (like Nationals)!!!

can you tell which one is me?

7.  After grad school I coached cross country and track at the same university I graduated from for 2 years.

8.  When I was about 24, I went on a college ski trip (it was one of the years I was coaching) and right before the trip one of the girls on the track team gave me hair extensions (it took about 8-9 hours).

I loved having extensions even though they only lasted a couple weeks

9.  I love my boys with every fiber of my being but my 2 favorite men will always be these 2 –

10.  My boys think that I ask them if they are OK way too often.

What is a random fact about you?

Happy Monday!!

Taking it Easy (8/31 – 9/6)

This week was all about taking it easy with the workouts after last weeks high mileage.  And, my legs needed the break – they were tired!!!

Sunday 8/31  44 jump lunges (straight up and down in lunge position).

This was a fun way to get the heart rate up!!  It was hard to catch a good picture of me jumping:)

And, then I had to switch legs and do some more jumps –

Hunter did a pretty good job snapping a picture while I was in the air!!

Monday 9/1 – 44 reverse lunge to single leg T-stand.

My right hip was dying by the time I finished all 44 of these!!!  And, then I had to work my left hip!

Can you tell that my balance isn’t as good on my left side?  I’m not very parallel in that last picture!!!

Tuesday 9/2  44 front step to runners lunge.

I did all 44 with my right leg and then shared with my left!!

I did Fat Burning Pilates (very low impact) and then walked with a 9% incline for 3.25 miles.

Wednesday 9/3  44 pulsing lunges with foot on stability ball.

The hardest part of this was staying balanced and not toppling over!!!

Today was Turbo Jam – Ab Jam (this was a fun ab workout that I always forget about!) and 4.4 miles walking at 9% incline.

Thursday 9/4  44 stationary side lunges with one foot on a wobble disc.

I did all 44 to the right and then switched feet so I could do more!

I pulled out a DVD that I rarely do – Shape Pilates.  I did all 4 of the 15 minute sections for a decent workout.

Friday 9/5  44 step-ups onto foot stool.

And, because I’ve been way more tired than normal this week, I actually slept till 6:00 instead of getting up to workout!

Saturday 9/6  44 single leg squats with opposite leg extension.  (and because I’m super classy, I’m going to show you the pictures I took in my bathroom mirror after my shower)

These were hard – between staying balanced and trying to coordinate the move it was a nice little challenge!!!  And, I don’t want my legs to feel left out of a move so I did another set of 44 on the left leg.

No running this week – I will probably do a couple super easy runs early next week and then hopefully be ready for Thursday!!!

Happy Saturday!

The Hardest Worker I Know – a Feel Good Story!!

You know those stories you read about someone coming from nothing and working hard to become a success?!  Well, Chris is a perfect example of how that can happen!

3 generations
Chris with his dad & grandpa

Chris has 4 sisters (he is the next to youngest) and about the time he turned 12, his parents divorced.  His mom raised all of them on her own.  She often worked 3 jobs at the same time to provide for them.

Early on Chris knew he wanted to be a pilot but he didn’t think he had a chance since there wasn’t any extra money.

high school
high school

However, he found a way!!!  He lost the beard (and some of the hair!!) and enlisted in the Air Force.ChrisHe earned his college degree while in Active Duty and then he joined the Kansas Air National Guard in the Weather Flight.

Eventually he earned a pilot slot and went to pilot training (Hooray, since we met during that time!!!)!!  Of course, he didn’t stop working hard just because he was in – he graduated top in his class!!!

Chris has been part of the Kansas Air National Guard for over 20 years now and has been promoted numerous times.

Effective Monday, September 8, Chris will become the Vice Wing Commander at the base.  (For those of you who don’t know military lingo – this means he is the 2nd in command of the entire base!!!)

This is a huge deal for a guy from Holton, KS who has worked incredibly hard his entire life for everything he has!!
I am so very proud of him and this incredible accomplishment/achievement!!

Screen Shot 2014-09-03 at 3.38.48 PM

Chris has always been a natural leader and he will shine in his new role.

In all areas of his life (as Colonel Turner, dad, “babe”) Chris sets an example for me and everyone around him to work hard and always do the very best job possible!!!

Happy Thursday!!!
