14 Fun Facts for Hunter’s 14th Birthday

Happy Birthday today to Hunter (my baby who isn’t a baby at all!!)!!!

Today Hunter is 14!!!  In honor of his big day I decided to share 14 fun facts about him.

1.  Hunter was born 6 weeks early.  Thankfully I went into labor on a Wednesday and he wasn’t born until early Sunday morning.  In that time I had 2 huge steroid shots (one in each hip) to aid in his lung development.  Even early he weighed 5’9″ and only had to spend 1 week in the NICU.

2.  This guy has always been able to make me smile.  (Well, there was a brief time when he was 3 that I didn’t smile a lot but…..)

3.  Hunter is perfectly happy to be his own person!!!

4.  Everyday when I ask Hunter how his day was, he says – “Good, how was your’s?”  In the morning when I ask him how he slept he says. “Good, how did you sleep?”

5.  Hunter truly cares about those around him.  A couple weeks ago when we were talking about his day he said in PE  he was teamed up with one of the kids who needs a para.  He said they lost that day but he had fun because he could help his partner.

6.  Hunter sets goals – lots of them!  Some are small (like getting Jordan to give him a high 5) and others are life goals (like going to MIT)!

7.  Hunter is like a walking encyclopedia on some topics.  I have no idea how he retains all the stuff in his head.  There are lots of times I feel like a complete idiot when we have conversations!!!

8.  He will always wave to me, say hi, come over and even hug me when he sees me – even if his friends are around!

Life is like a cube - you just have to solve it.

9.  Hunter is a Rubik cube expert!!  He can solve everything from the 2 x 2 up to the 10 x 10 (did you know they even made all those cubes?) and some odd shaped “cubes” as well.  I think his record on the standard Rubik Cube is around 19.44 seconds.

10.  In just a few years he has turned into a really great cello player and received some big awards.

11.  Hunter has a signature color and everyone can see him coming!!!  He wears this color shirt and shorts every day!!!  (he has lots!!

12.  Hunter has a list (it is LONG) of all the things he wants to learn – about 20 languages, every math skill possible, chess (as an expert)……

13.  Hunter ran 13 miles (actually 13.1) to celebrate being 13 – I think he plans to run 14 later this year.  What a great idea!!  Wonder where he came up with something like that?!

14.  Hunter completes our family!!  It was great many years ago when it was just Chris and I.  Then Jordan made us a family of 3 and life  was amazing.  But, being a family of 4 is perfect for us!

Happy 14th Birthday to Hunter!!!!

Trying to Put an End to the Self Doubt

The past couple of days I’ve been in a bit of a funk and a lot of the reason is because of all the negative garbage in my head.

Screen Shot 2014-09-09 at 8.51.14 PM

I’m doubting my ability to finish an ultra and I’m trying to put an end to that doubt.  I know I’ve trained.  I’ve tried to rest – not easy and not my normal!

The fact that I’ve started a 50 mile race not once but twice and still haven’t completed it isn’t helping my mindset.

But, this race isn’t a 50.  It is a timed race – since it is on 9/11 it is 9 hours 11 minutes (starting at noon and ending at 9:11 pm).  The fact that I’m hoping to run 50 miles (or more) in that time  is probably what has me all tied in knots!!!

There are lots of differences between this race and the 50 I’ve attempted in the past.  For starters, it is not on a rock road full of hills –

mile 33.5
mile 33.5

I won’t be running by myself in the middle of nowhere either!!!

This race is a small loop (0.67 miles) around a park – Screen Shot 2014-09-09 at 8.59.59 PM

There will be other runners all day (there is a half and marathon besides the ultra) plus friends, family and volunteers all around the course!!!

The weather is looking awesome – high of 66 and partly cloudy!!  So much better than the 90 degree temps that we have had recently!!

Now, I just need to stop doubting myself and get out there and do what I love – Screen Shot 2014-09-09 at 9.03.15 PM

What do you do to overcome self doubt?

Happy Wednesday!!!

Tuesday Rewind

I decided that I would share a true “Day-with-kt.”

Tuesday, June 3

5:00 am – alarm goes off.  Always loud and annoying but I get up because otherwise my workout clothes would just mock me later!!!

By 9:00 am, I had done my 44, run 15 miles (while catching up on some of The Bachelorette – not all because there were 2 episodes!!), started dinner in the crock pot –

Sweet & Tangy Pulled Pork
Sweet & Tangy Pulled Pork

and made something for the boys to have for lunch –

a confetti rice salad with chicken and lots of veggies

(small glimpse into our fridge!!).  I was almost done cleaning up from the cooking when Jordan made his first appearance of the day – but at least 9 is earlier than 11:30!!!  (Hunter had already been in for breakfast closer to 8.)

After a quick shower and primp time, I was ready for the day –

ready to go
ready to go

Hunter and I ran to Target – he wanted to use some of his money for a new X-Box game and I had to get basics – toilet paper, paper towels – fun stuff for sure!!!

11:00 am – back home, stuff put up and ready to head downtown to meet a friend for lunch!!!

The only bummer about going downtown – metered parking!!!  I had exactly 1 quarter (15 minutes of parking).  Thankfully I had 2 dollar bills (I rarely have cash!) and I ran into a bar near where I parked to get change!!!  It was a trek to get to the place we were meeting but I’m all about adding steps!!!

Lunch was fun!!!  Then, it was time to get busy!!!

I had to stop by our venue (fairly close to downtown!) and drop off a pile of stuff from my car –

stuff for venue

I was so excited Saturday when we stopped by a friend’s house that was doing a moving sale – they had a nearly new microwave for $20!!!  And, the large black tub is full of clean tablecloths just waiting to get ironed again (Thursday’s fun!)!!!

After unloading, collecting mail and rent from our tenants, I headed to the liquor store!!!  This was actually a work trip!!!  We are bar tending (our first time) at an event on Saturday, and I had to get the stuff we need.

3:00 pm – home for a short time.  Talked to the boys a few minutes (sad how little time I spent with them yesterday but today is completely different and we have plans for the swim beach!!), then headed out to my “office” –

my favorite work space

It was actually hotter than normal out there yesterday afternoon!!!

Chris got home around 3:30 and I chatted with him until about 4:15 then I had to get ready to head out again.

The best part about driving back to the venue this time – I chatted with Stacy (sis-in-law) the entire time!  We are trying to plan a little meet-up for July – much needed get-away!!!

5:15 pm – meeting with a June bride and her fiancé to discuss how they want  everything set up for their special day!!  Always fun to be part of such a happy occasion!!!

6:00 pm – one of my favorite events every month – Hair Night!!!  I have mentioned before that I’ve been going to Jennifer for over 13 years – every 4 weeks (joy of short hair) and it is always fun!!!

quick picture of hair after
quick picture of hair after

8:30 pm – home!!!!  I had a pork sandwich while talking to Chris a bit.  Read a few blogs but sadly yesterday was one of those days were I didn’t get to do much blog reading/commenting.

I thought about writing this post last night but instead decided to get to bed before 10:00 for a change!!!

FitBitOf course, the 15 miles helped on the steps but about 6,500 of those steps were done in these shoes with heels!!

SandalsWell, it’s time to get going with a new day!!!  I’m happy that this one will have a little less driving around and more time to hang with the boys!!!

Happy Wednesday!!

Sleep-Overs: Love Them or Hate Them?

Today I worked my core with the 44.  I did side leg drops (a pilates move).

Start on your back with your legs at 90 degrees and knees glued together –

ready
ready

Slowly drop your legs to the right while keeping your upper body flat on the ground –

to the right
to the right

Bring your legs back up and slowly drop to the left –

and to the left
and to the left

This move is supposed to be slow and controlled and is a nice stretch for your core.  After just a few back and forth reps you will start to feel this in your abs (especially in the obliques!).

I’m fixing to head down and hop on my treadmill – nothing major just a nice run to get my legs moving again after a few relatively low key days!!  Trying to keep my mileage building!

Screen Shot 2014-01-11 at 8.26.45 AMDid you know that boys do sleep-overs, too?  (They would never call it a slumber party or anything but…)

A typical male sleep-over involves food (lots of it), games (usually of the X-Box variety) and movies!!  At least those are the things usually involved at our house.

I’m not a super fan!!!  I love the boys to have their friends over but the sleep-over thing usually just results in OVER TIRED boys!!!!

Even when I was growing up I didn’t really like sleep-overs.  I don’t think I ever had anyone sleep-over at my house (for a variety of reasons) but I didn’t really enjoy sleeping at other’s homes either.

Screen Shot 2014-01-11 at 8.33.44 AMI’ve mentioned a time (or 20) that I have sleep issues!!!  I think sleep-overs only make it worse – something about the added responsibility maybe?!  Even when my boys are at someone else’s house it makes my sleep worse.  (I know – ISSUES!!!)

All that being said – our boys do still have sleep-overs – sometimes here and sometimes at other people’s homes.  I just have to get over my many issues and deal!!!!

So, sleep-overs – do you love them or hate them?

Happy Saturday!!!

Big Plans and Goals

Today I used a medicine ball for my 43Medicine Balls

I don’t know if you can tell, but the ball in the top left has handles on it (handy, huh?!).  It is an 8 pound ball and was perfect for today’s move.

I did a sit-up with an overhead press at the top of the move.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAbU6rR8Oh8′]

This was a nice 43 to work my abs and boy do they need it!!  It’s been almost 2 weeks since I had a true workout and I can tell!!!

So, in 17 days I will be at Day Screen shot 2013-05-06 at 8.36.10 AM for my Daily 43.  That means that I have another super long run planned – 250 minutes (4 hours and 10 minutes).

My goal for the run is to run a steady 8:00 minutes/mile pace.  If I do that then I will run just over Screen shot 2013-05-06 at 8.38.16 AM31 miles!!!

However, I didn’t plan on losing 2+ weeks of training and conditioning.  I’m a little worried that I might not be able to meet my goal.

So, I may have to adjust my goal a little – I still plan to run 250 minutes.  I might just have to cut myself a little slack on my pace and distance covered.  Screen shot 2013-05-06 at 8.44.57 AM

At least I still have 2.5 weeks to prepare – and by prepare I mean let my legs continue to heal and hopefully start working out again!!!

What do you do when the circumstances of life interfere with your plans and goals?

My plan is to adjust and keep on pushing!!!

Happy Monday!!

Kim
