Why do People Take Advantage of a Kind Act?

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 8.12.44 PMIn general, I feel like I’m a nice person.  For my friends I will go out of my way to help in whatever way possible and for people in general I try to always do whatever I can to help them.

BUT…..I hate when I try to do something nice and end up being taken advantage of and treated rudely in the process.

Saturday was one of those times when I tried to do something nice for someone and ended up having many hours of my day wasted and being treated very rudely.

After waiting for a couple of hours to help someone and do them a favor my blood started to boil.  After waiting more than a couple of hours and then listening to the people I waited for be hateful and act like I should be willing to donate my entire day to them I was livid.

We had a new tenant moving in to her apartment and offered to let them use the venue stairs and the connecting hallway because it is much easier for moving furniture in than the apartment stairs.  In order to do this, I had to be there since it is a locked door that only Chris and I have the key for.

I had told the girl and her family that I would be there Saturday morning cleaning so that would be perfect.  Well, she wanted to move in Saturday evening.  Once she informed me of her plans (on Thursday) I told her we had personal plans and that wouldn’t work but that we would be there Saturday morning cleaning (early so we could spend some of the day with our boys).

She showed up at 1:45!  And, between her and her parents, I was appalled at the rudeness.  They basically told me that since I didn’t have an event they should be able to move in any time during the day.

Yes if you use the tight cramped apartment stairs you can do it on your time but when I’m doing you a favor by opening the venue for free it should be on my time.  Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 8.12.07 PM

I was shaking with anger the entire time that they hauled stuff up the stairs (which had to be re-cleaned before I could leave since we had a wedding on Sunday).

Lesson learned.  But I’m still a bit torqued about the entire situation.

Have you ever tried to do something nice for someone and had it backfire so that you ended up being taken advantage of?

Happy Monday!!
