I am a 44 year old wife, mom and athlete. I started running in high school and have loved it ever since. As I got older, I had to stop running every day so I added in weight training and all sorts of fun work-outs like Insanity, P90X and Turbo Fire. I'm a certified personal trainer and I love all aspects of fitness.

2013 – Off to a Great Start!

Even though it was after 2am when we went to bed this morning, we were still up by 8 – crazy!!!  No need to sleep the day away I guess (although I think a nap might be on tap later today!).

For the 43 today, I went way back to my days as a college track coach – sprinter abs.  It is similar to a crunch:  keep your core contracted and move your feet and arms sort of like you are running.  (maybe the video will help – my brain is sort of mush today!!!)

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTMV5ATLrNg’]

I counted a right knee and left knee as 1 rep.  This was a quick 43 but I definitely felt it.

I’m still keeping up with the 12 Days of Fitness – today was day 7!

awesome new running outfit!!!
awesome new running outfit!!!

I wore my new running outfit for the first time today!!  MizFit running skirt and sports bra – super cute.  (I was getting frustrated with the picture taking – hard to get a shot that didn’t make my gut look disgusting!!!)

Because last night had a lot of this:

Tequila!!!
Tequila!!!

I needed a good work-out today.  Plus, I always start the New Year with a run!!!  4 weeks ago when the DR said no weight-bearing, blah……for 8 weeks I knew that would never work!  I also knew that I would run today – gotta sweat out the tequila start the New Year right!!

Chris said – how about 1 mile?  Really?!! I’ll just do 5.  I did run 5 miles (on the treadmill at 1.5 incline in 40 minutes) – I am out of shape!!!  It was awesome to run again – hopefully I don’t pay a high price in the next day or so!  (I’m sure it will be fine!)

We had a great time last night (into the early morning) bringing in the new year with friends!  I’m looking forward to a great year!  I truly want to enjoy every part of my life this year – the small, daily things as well as the big “high-light” events!!

Happy 2013 – I hope y’all are all off to a great start!!

Good-Bye 2012

The final 43 of 2012 involved my

BOSU
BOSU

Today I did an L-step to the right with a knee raise and oblique crunch, L-step off the back with a knee raise and oblique crunch, repeat to left side and back = 1 rep.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTDxViXl5T0′]

You can tell from the video that I included a knee raise and crunch as often as possible.  I enjoyed this 43 – it got my heart rate up some but was still low-impact!

I did day 6 of the 12 Days of Fitness – today added in 6 pull-ups. (I had to do the assisted kind!)

Today instead of doing a work-out, I closed out my work-out log for the year.  It was a pretty consistent year of working out for me – 291 days!!!  (if all I did was the daily 43, that did not count as a work-out day)   Only 78 days of running (stupid stress fracture/hip pain!!!) but I did get a total of 694.7 miles so that is 8.9 as a daily average!!!  Hopefully I will stay injury free in 2013!!

Some highlights of 2012:

  • Quit my job in June (happy & a little sad)
  • family trip to Florida   in June
  • Great Wolf Lodge with boys
  • Sam & Stacy up for 4th of July
  • family trip to Texas in July – spent lots of time with my 98 year-old Poppa
  • Hunter broke his arm (he handled it very well!) – end of July
  • family trip to Denver in August
  • started this blog in mid September!!
  • quick trip to TX – shopping with my sister – early October
  • lots of time spent together as a family – Chris wasn’t deployed at all this past year!!!

Looking forward to a great new year in 2013!!!Screen shot 2012-12-31 at 9.37.53 AM

I’m going to try to remember this quote every day!!!  I truly want 2013 to be the year that I live my life in the moment and not spend all of my time looking ahead (or behind)!

Happy end of 2012!!!

Texas Longhorns Win the Alamo Bowl!!!!

Hook ’em Horns!!!!  Way to end the year with a big win!

The 43 today was another combo move – you know I love combos!!!  It was a power fly.  I started on my back and then lifted my hips (I kept my hips up the entire time it took to complete the 43).  Each time I did a fly with my arms, I did a knee pull to my chest (alternating my knees).  I counted a right knee pull and a left knee pull as one rep so I actually did 86 chest flys!!!  Good thing I stuck with 10 pound dumbbells!!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU0HKGyUx30′]

I had to keep giving myself a little pep talk – I said at 23 I would take a short break but I didn’t!!  I said 33 would be the short rest – NO!!!  I made all 43 (86) without taking a break!!!

Today was day 5 of the 12 Days of Fitness – added in 5 frog crunches!

I am totally loving Hunter’s new punching bag/speed bag combo!!  I have decided it is a great substitute for me while I can’t run – I get a great cardio work-out with it and my arms are like jello after I’m done!!!  A total win!!!

Today I did 50 right jabs, 50 left jabs, 500 right-left punches  x 5 sets.  I didn’t take any breaks and it took 19 minutes.  Total of 3000 punches – 1500 with each arm and my arms are still shaking!!!  I also worked on the speed bag for about 2.5 minutes – I still don’t have great timing – hopefully it will get better!  I love the way I feel my triceps working when I hit the speed bag.    Who knows – maybe I will have a new career soon!

It could be fun!  I wonder if the boys would come watch or be embarrassed?  Hmmm…..

Hunter has added another Rubik Cube to his collection – the 2 x 2 cube.  I didn’t even know there was such a thing until recently!!!  This one came yesterday afternoon in the mail (I had ordered these specialty ones and they were a bit late for Christmas – oh, well – extended Christmas for Hunter!!!)

Last night it was great to watch the Longhorns win!  They haven’t played up to their potential the last year or two – hopefully Mac Brown is right and 2013 will be their year!!!

Guess I should get busy – Chris has  almost finished cleaning the whole house while I’ve been sitting here – oops!!!

Happy Sunday!

Caution: May Cause Rug Burns

Today’s 43 almost got the best of me!!!  It was HARD!  (and then I started laughing at myself because I know I looked like a complete goof – just made the move harder!!)

So, now that y’all are all dying to try the 43 for yourself, here you go.  I did a 4-way plank hold:  Start in plank (elbows for this move), turn to right side plank, turn to a backwards plank (nearly impossible for me!), turn to a left side plank and finally back to plank to complete 1 rep.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGB6OlxJeyM’]

I alternated directions just to make counting easier!  You can see in the video how much I struggled on the back plank (I actually didn’t hold the 2nd one in the demo – oops!!!).  Fun times for sure!!!

Now that I have completed 43 of those crazy twisting, turning planks, I have serious rug burns on my elbows – who knew?  Guess I should have left my jacket on or something (like maybe  elbow pads!!!).  If you are going to do this move I recommend covering  your elbows with something!!!

Today I also did day 4 of the 12 Days of Fitness.  The extended plank hold (1 minute) was a little more challenging after all of the other planking today!

It’s the weekend!!!  Hopefully the boys will want to do something fun (they are perfectly content to hang out at home most all of the time – so that might be what we go with!!).

Happy Saturday!

Final Fun Friday of 2012

Fun Friday – my favorite!!!

Today was a fun day overall – home with the boys (and I even convinced them to play a couple of games with me!!). Snowflakes that didn’t amount to anything -yay!!!  Party machine!

Party Machine!!!!
Party Machine!!!!

I made a big pot of chicken tortilla soup and we had friends over to break in the new drink machine tonight!  This thing totally rocks – you can put in either rum, vodka or tequila and get 15-20 different drink options with the juice and sour mix – so AWESOME!!!!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRwRk0eS-BY’]

(You can hear Jordan in the background – he is our rule-following  boy!!!)  You can push the ‘I feel lucky’ button and let the machine pick your drink  or spin the dial to your choice – AWESOME!!!  Sad thing – I quit recording a couple seconds too early and you don’t get to see the cheers at the end of the drink pour.

Fun times with good friends! Warm and toasty house = Fun Friday to the max!!!
