I am a 44 year old wife, mom and athlete. I started running in high school and have loved it ever since. As I got older, I had to stop running every day so I added in weight training and all sorts of fun work-outs like Insanity, P90X and Turbo Fire. I'm a certified personal trainer and I love all aspects of fitness.
Most days around 3:25 when the boys get home from school we sit and chat about their day. I look forward to this time and hope that the boys always feel like they can share any and everything with me without fear of being judged or loved any less.
One day last week Jordan told me about his day and then he had something else to tell me.
For the last year or so Jordan has had a nice little group of friends – boys and girls. I know most of these kids and lots of their parents and they are all very nice.
Well, Jordan wanted to tell me about one of the boys that just moved here last year (I haven’t met him yet).
Jordan kind of stumbled around and couldn’t find the words for exactly what he wanted to tell me. He finally managed to say that this particular boy liked other boys. I think I surprised him when I said “OK.”
Well, this boy (M) had kept it a secret for a long time but over the previous weekend his parents found out and they did not react well at all. They told him he couldn’t hang out with the group of friends he had been with – I guess they thought that hanging around different people would “change” him. They told him he could only hang out with his “friends” who didn’t support him.
I could tell that Jordan was bothered by the way M’s parents handled the situation and I told him that there was nothing he could do or tell me that would lessen the love I have for him!!
I feel horrible for Jordan’s friend M and the fact that his parents are not able to accept him as he is.
Jordan and Hunter and I had a long discussion about the fact that I want them to know they can always tell me anything and I will still love them with every single part of my heart!!!
This is something that has been on my mind since the conversation I had with Jordan last week. When I was growing up I never felt comfortable telling my mom much and I don’t want my boys to ever experience those feelings.
Do you have an open relationship with your parents and/or kids?
Boomer’s Burn was all about intervals – this one was awesome and I did a total of 6 miles to complete the workout!!!
Friday 10/3 – 45 wacky jacks.
Thanks to Jordan for letting me record him on this move.
I skipped my normal workout because I had been up all night Thursday night stirring my crockpots of taco meat. (I thought it would be FUN to do all the food for Chris’ party!!!)
Saturday 10/4 – 45 standing crunch with a knee in (arms raised overhead the entire time).
crunch with right knee inleg back
Switch sides and do 45 more –
left knee inback
I loved this move – so much more fun to do standing crunches!!
Stacy and I got in a cold run around the lake (6 miles) before we started working on the last minute stuff for the big party. Always fun to run with Stacy since it rarely happens!!
Sunday 10/5 – 45 ottoman push-ups to Griffin!!!
Hi, Griffinbaby smiles on the down part
I was keeping Griffin entertained (and awake) while Mandi finished getting ready and packing for their drive home!!!
Monday 10/6 – 45 squats on wobble balls – alternate touching inside of right foot and left foot (right-left = 1 rep).
ready – trying not to fall offsquat – touch right hand to left footback to startsquat – right hand to left foot
This move was fun!! I tried to squat low – I don’t always go below 90 when I squat but on this day I did!!
Boomer’s Burn was a cardio/strength workout again – one of my favorites!!!
I also ran 6 miles in 44:37.
Tuesday 10/7 – 45 triangle presses.
readyright hand down – left upback to startleft hand down right hand up
This move is a good one to do slowly and really work on the stretch. I’m not super flexible so it is a challenge for me!!! (I counted a right-left as 1 rep)
I did another Piyo workout that I really liked – Buns – some fun ways to work my butt!!!
Boomer’s Burn was another great interval workout!! I think that even after I finish this program next week I will keep incorporating interval days – love how hard it makes me push myself!!!
Wednesday 10/8 – 45 leg circles (on all 4s) with leg at about a 45 degree angle from body.
position
This is the basic position – it doesn’t really matter if you circle font or back – same effect. I had a video but encountered some technical difficulties. I did 45 with each leg!!
Boomer’s Burn focused on body weight moves (I did end up adding weights though)!
And I managed 9 miles in 66:30 – lately I haven’t been able to get in many long runs – need to work on that!
I have so many thoughts drifting around in my head I thought I would just do a bullet post.
Oh – not that kind of bullet.
* One of the 3 apartments above our venue is vacant. The previous tenant had a knee replacement and couldn’t do the stairs so she moved out almost 2 weeks ago. On Monday I showed it to 2 different girls (one in the morning and one in the evening) – the 2nd one took it on the spot. The first emailed a day later and wanted it. Good news – our 3rd floor tenant just told me he has to move out (also health issues) and this other girl already said she wants his apartment!!!
the small apartment that we just re-rented
* Tonight is Friday night football (Homecoming!!) and band – sadly it is cold and rainy! (like in the low 50s)
* Sam & Stacy left their pillows here after their quick weekend trip. It is sort of pricey to mail pillows from Kansas to Texas. But, they have some high quality pillows so I did it!!! Just so you know – USPS is much cheaper than UPS.
* All week I’ve been bothered by the fact that some good friends of our totally blew off Chris’ big day – they decided earlier in the week to take a little weekend trip instead. I keep telling myself that it doesn’t matter but it hurt my feelings.
* I think that Saturday or Sunday is going to be cool enough to make our first soup of the fall – now I just need to figure out a good recipe!!!
* I’m happy it’s Friday – Chris is off until Tuesday and we have to work in the vacant apartment a little but then we are going to have a Modern Family (season 5) marathon!!!
A couple weeks ago I went to the dermatologist. At my annual wellness check-up earlier this year my doctor suggested that maybe I should since I sort of LOVE the sun!!!
Well, I had a few spots that he (dermatologist) decided to biopsy. He said it was no big deal – just a shot in each spot (3) and then a razor blade that would scrape out a little bit of skin.
Hmm…I told him I would schedule it on my way out. NOPE – he was planning to do the biopsies right then. NICE!!!
Here is the picture I posted on instagram after I escaped –1 in my left hand and 2 in my left bicep. 2 weeks later and the areas are finally starting to heal!!
However, last week the nurse called me and apparently one of the spots on my arm is skin cancer (the other 2 are pre-cancerous spots).
Now they want to dig into my arm. The nurse said that I would have stitches for 2 weeks and not be able to lift anything (weights, chairs at the venue, laundry baskets…..) for those 2 weeks plus a week after.
I said, “OK, I will just run more.”
She said I couldn’t run either or do anything that would cause me to sweat.
So I told her – NO THANK YOU!!!
Her response was to just eat less for a few weeks – clearly she doesn’t know that it isn’t about eating it is about needing to sweat pretty much every day!!!
Then I made the mistake of googling skin cancer images – YUCK!!!
I’m going to spare you all of the nasty horrible pictures.
the beach
Our plan has been to retire to the beach in a few years (hopefully less than 10!!!) – I hope this plan doesn’t have to change!!!
I guess I will have to buy stock in sunscreen!!!
Do you go to the dermatologist regularly?
I guess I will be from this point on:(
Happy Wednesday!!
Kim
BTW – I’m going to suck it up and let them dig in my arm but I still plan to figure out ways to workout during that time!!!
Sometimes there just aren’t words to express the depth of my emotions – this weekend was one of times!!!

All of the hard work of last week and lost sleep was worth it to enjoy every second of the time with my family celebrating Chris’ big day!!!!
Mandi, Dad (holding Griffin), Tim, Sam, StacyHunter, Jordan
I’m beyond thankful to my family and Chris’ family and some of our very dear friends for coming to the ceremony and then helping us celebrate at the party!!!
pinning on the “birds”Hunter & I pinned Chris’ shoulder boards and Jordan pinned the hat
My family and some of Chris’ spent almost as much time traveling during the weekend as time here with us. Having them help celebrate made the day even more special!!!
I know how busy everyone is these days and the fact that our families basically dropped everything for a couple of days means more to me than anything.
Also, our friends who changed plans, worked around existing schedules and made it a priority to help celebrate with Chris are the greatest!!!
Even with everything going on (cooking and planning a party for 150+), hosting my family, going to Hunter’s final cross country meet…..I enjoyed every second of this past weekend!!!
I needed the time I normally spend blogging last week to prepare for the weekend and I’m happy that I took that time but I’m also happy to be back to normal blogging (and reading!!!) this week.
