Is it about the Journey or the end Destination?

Today’s 43 was the move that I used for G in my ABC Boot Camp – Groaners!!!  I think that this move is really called a thruster but I changed the name to make it work for my letters (and there was a bit of groaning involved!!).

Start in plank – jump feet in to hands out wide – jump back to plank.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRU37_50b0c’]

I think the jumping involved in this 43 helped work out some of the residual soreness from my long run the other day!!

Today was 6 am Boot Camp and it was pretty tough!!!  We did 3 mini pyramids (I had 4 planned but I didn’t want to go over the 45 minutes!!).   Even though I made it up, I’m sort-of dreading repeating it tomorrow at the beach – well, not really but I know that I will be feeling it!!

I’m also participating in a fitness challenge with Taylor @ Lifting Revolution.  I don’t do many challenges but I like the way this one is structured – 6 weeks, 6 different workouts (1 per week to be done 3x), a couple of new recipes – it fits in perfectly with the way I like to work out!!  Today was the first day and this week’s workout is challenging!! It only took about 30 minutes or so to complete the whole thing but it was intense.  I still have 2 more times to repeat it this week – can’t wait!!!

So, what do you think – journey or destination?  I think that it varies at different points in life.  I know that  if you look at all of the inspirational quotes they all say the same thing –

Screen shot 2013-07-15 at 8.17.37 AM

However, I think that there are some times that the destination is the best part!!!   Especially when the journey involves thisScreen shot 2013-07-15 at 8.26.35 AMfor this amount of time and miles!!!Screen shot 2013-07-15 at 8.29.11 AMBut the destination is so worth it when it isScreen shot 2013-07-15 at 8.31.06 AMwhich means lots of time enjoying my favorite happy place!!Screen shot 2013-07-15 at 8.30.37 AM

I’m not gonna lie – I am not the most fun person to travel with!!  I just want to get there!!!  Stops are short, infrequent and only when necessary!!!  I’m not one of those people that likes to detour and check out all the sites on the way.  I’ve tried to be more like that when traveling and all it does is make me grit my teeth – I just want to keep trucking along until we are at the final destination!!!

Now, there are lots of other areas of life that I’m all about the journey!Screen shot 2013-07-15 at 8.16.00 AMI think my fitness journey is kind of like the above quote – it’s a journey that will never end because I want to continue to try and improve my fitness level every single day!!

The same could be said about my role as both a wife and a mother – it’s about enjoying the journey!!Screen shot 2013-07-15 at 8.15.08 AMI like the above quote – because I think that in many areas it is true – the journey is the destination and it should be enjoyed and treasured at every little stop.  It’s not about rushing through to get to the end but stopping frequently along the way!!!  (as long as we aren’t talking about a mega long car trip!!!)

What do you think – journey or destination?
Long car trips – stop and sight see or just get there?

Happy Monday!

My Favorite Way to Cook

I decided it was time for another burpee variation for the 43 today.  I’m still working on the awesome list of 30 burpees that Taylor @ Lifting Revolution shared awhile back.  Today I did a burpee with a lateral jump over a step – FUN TIMES!!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQT6e33BNuM’]

6:00 am boot camp was fun – we did the Move It, Move It workout (all legs!!) from Friday because I knew that none of the people who came Friday would be here this morning.  It was HUMID  – we were drenched by the end of the workout.

I decided to run on my treadmill instead of outside because I knew that I would be sucking air thanks to the mugginess.  I ran at 1.5% incline – 5 miles 31:34 + 1 mile super easy for a cool down.

Irving Naxon  – anyone know who he is?  He developed the “all-purpose” cooker which was bought by The Rival Company in 1970 and reintroduced in 1971 as the Crock Pot.

a few of the crock pots I use
a few of the crock pots I use

I think the Crock Pot is truly  my favorite kitchen appliance!!!  I use one of my crock pots at least once a week and often as many as 3 times a week.  There have been many meals that I have 2 crock pots full of stuff!!!

Any day that I have evening plans I try to get dinner into the crock pot in the morning.  Such a great feeling to know that dinner (at least part of it) is already done!!!

I’m pretty sure that I’ve already shared my love of cookbooks before.Cookbooks

CookbooksIn my collection, I have a whole shelf devoted to crock pot/slow cooker cook books.  My favorites are from the Fix-It-and-Forget-It series.Screen shot 2013-07-07 at 8.48.52 PM

One of the great things about using a crock pot is there is really no need for a recipe.  The thing that I do the most is put a cut of meat (ribs, round steak, roast, brisket, chicken breasts, pork roast, turkey breasts, even a whole chicken) with a rub and/or a sauce of some sort and let it cook all day.  Super easy and by the end of the day we have a very tender piece of meat!

In the fall and winter I make all kinds of soups and chili in the crock pot.  In the summer, I love to use the crock pot to keep the kitchen from heating up!!

I even take one of my crock pots with me on some of our longer trips (when we stay places with a kitchen) so that we don’t have to eat out every meal and I don’t have to spend any time really cooking.

Do you use a crock pot very often?  What is your favorite recipe in the crock pot?

Happy Monday!!

Happy 4th of July

Today’s 43 matches the theme of the day – star jumps to celebrate Independence Day!!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOsZcKAnxac’]

This was a quick 43 but I was feeling it by the end.  For some reason, these jumps always get my heart rate sky high really quickly!!!

And, not because it is a holiday, but because I think I need it – today is a DAY OFF!!!

We love 4th of July!!!  I don’t know how fireworks are where you live, but here, you can buy and shoot off fireworks for the entire week leading up to the 4th.  And – we take advantage of the week!!!  Most evenings we are outside making fire on the driveway!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUK2ukYmZck’]

I think that sometimes we take our freedom for granted but today is a good day to remember how fortunate we really are!

Screen shot 2013-07-04 at 8.40.12 AM

I’m thankful for all that happened so many years ago so that we could enjoy the freedoms that we have in our country today!!!

Screen shot 2013-07-04 at 8.42.06 AMOur day will be spent hanging out and this evening we have friends coming over for our annual 4th of July party – plenty of good food, fireworks on the driveway, wrapped up with the display on the lake (best viewed from the boat!!).

Screen shot 2013-07-04 at 8.40.59 AMWhatever your plans for the day – I hope it is a day full of fun, food, family, friends!!!

One final seen from earlier this week – plenty more will be fired off tonight – can’t wait!!

Happy Thursday & Happy 4th of July!!!

How do you Know if you Are Pushing Too Hard?

Today I went with a basketball inspired 43 in honor of the NBA Finals!  We (all but Jordan) are rooting for the Spurs!!!

The move requires a medicine ball (I used an 8 pound ball), or you could use a dumbbell, and has several parts:

  • lunge forward with right leg
  • pass ball under right leg
  • lunge back with right leg
  • pass ball under left leg
  • bring feet together
  • jump and press ball overhead

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zD5fdvqdiY’]

After completing 43 as listed above, I had to switch and do the lunges with my left leg for another set!

This was really a great combo 43 – worked my quads, calves, shoulders and even my upper back some work – plus because I moved fairly quickly, I got my heart rate up!!!

I woke up around 4:30 this morning to a pretty heavy rain so I wasn’t sure if anyone would come to Boot Camp this morning.  However, since today’s workout was at my house, we had the garage option (necessary today since not only was it raining, there was some thunder and lightening!).  I had a few show up and we had a good workout.  Today we did a really fun workout – Tabata Boot Camp!!!

After that I had Insanity Asylum – and I was sort-of dreading it today.  Today was Game Day (60 minutes of every possible sport) and Overtime (15 minutes designed to kill really challenge you).  Game Day actually  goes pretty quickly because you keep changing the sport (really it’s just moves that might be used in different sports).  And, I felt like I accomplished way more in Overtime today than last week – but the moves are still beyond brutal!!!!

Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.18.37 AM

I feel like the past few weeks, I have been living by the above motto.  Doing Insanity with Shaun T – you hear the phrase “Dig Deeper”  a LOT!!!  And, even though I’m in my basement living room with no one around (except Jordan who usually watches me to make sure I don’t die cheat) I feel like I have to push a little harder every time I hear those words.  Move my feet faster, jump higher, eek out a few more push-ups – doesn’t matter what it is, I just try to push myself even more!!

Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.18.06 AMI agree that you have to work hard to become who you want to be but at what point do you decide that maybe you need to back off just a little?  Do you have to change your goals and “settle” for less or do you just change the time-line for your goals?

Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.22.56 AMWe see quotes like the one above, or hear fitness professionals telling us to push as hard as we can and then push just a little harder.  But sometimes you need to hear – Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.42.26 AM

We all have different limits and amounts that we can tolerate.  I like to push myself hard almost everyday.  By pushing hard – I mean to the point of saying “I’m done.  I can’t do another _________ (rep, lap, mile, whatever).”

Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.21.11 AMFor others, pushing hard is something that can only occasionally be tolerated either because of health/injury or sometimes because of not being mentally prepared for the pain of pushing your limits.  And, there are some, who are willing to work but only to a certain level and have absolutely zero desire to push themselves any harder.   Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.27.40 AMPushing too hard for too long can lead to overtraining or burn-out.  (click the link for a great article in Runner’s World about overtraining).

I’m pretty sure if you look, or even feel, like thisScreen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.27.22 AMthen it is probably time to ease up and give yourself a little slack.

Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.22.37 AMSo, just because you see or hear the message to push harder all the time, remember to do what is right for you and your own personal limits.  Sometimes you feel weak because you have pushed harder than you should and it is time to back off a little.  It’s all about knowing your body and listening to the messages it gives you!!

Do you feel like you ever push too hard?  Is it easy for you to back off when you need to or do you try to push through?

Happy Monday!!!  I’m going to cut myself a little slack today – I hope you do the same if you need to!!!

Friday Fun Laughs

Today’s 43 was one of Hunter’s creations – I think sometimes he wants to see how hard he can push me!!!!  He does a couple and calls it quits but I have to do 43.  Oh, well – I like the challenge!!!

So, the move was a skater with a side push-up with one leg back and one knee bent.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5ZL-ukGm6s’]

Try them – it was a fun move (for about 20)!!!  I counted each push-up as 1 so maybe I cheated because I didn’t do 43 each side but I think 43 total was enough with this move!!!

Then it was Boot Camp time.  This morning I just did the 6 am in my backyard.  (Last Friday I did 6 and 7:15!!!)  I’m really happy that the hot weather this week has meant no more wet grass for boot camp – so much nicer!!!

Today’s Insanity Asylum workout was Back to Core.  Jordan decided to do this with me instead of just sit and watch (and critique) me.  I think it was good for him – he did about 25-30% and was dying.  And, I told him this is the “easiest” one in the program.  Now he knows that just because watching it is easy, doing the workout is another thing completely.  He said he will try some more so that he can build up – Good Plan!!! Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 8.38.52 AMI try to have fun no matter what I’m doing – some days and some events are a little harder than others to find the fun!!

Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 8.55.34 AMYIKES!!!  Don’t want that – better just laugh out loud!!!

Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 8.33.49 AM

So – I don’t really think anyone is an idiot but this made me laugh!!!

Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 8.59.51 AM

Sponge Bob knows how to laugh – and he laughs often (and annoyingly!!!).

Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 8.40.09 AMAlmost every day – often while running!!!  And then I always do the quick check to see if anyone saw me about bite the ground!!!

Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 8.56.48 AM

These things always entertain me (and because I’m sort-of anal I won’t quit looking until I can figure it out!!).

Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 9.00.14 AM

I couldn’t do this without going really slow – and I rarely say things slowly!!!  (even then it took a lot of tries!!)

Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 8.30.56 AM

This just made me laugh because I’m usually the one that asks a stupid question like “what are you doing?” when it totally obvious what someone is doing!!!

Screen shot 2013-06-14 at 9.00.38 AMAnd, I don’t know why this picture cracked me up so much but it did!!  Maybe because it is sort of true.

Happy Fun Friday – I hope you have lots of joy and laughter today!!!!
