All Roads Lead to TEXAS!!

Today’s 43 was a wide bicep curl with one of my bands (the perfect travel tool!!).

I stood with my feet fairly wide apart so that I could add tension to the band.

(never mind the bed in the background – joy of a hotel room!)  By the time I finished 43 of these, my arms were shaking!!!

I’m using this week as a bit of recovery from the past few weeks of 2-3 workouts a day!  Today I did one of my old favorites (a perfect workout for a hotel room!!) – Turbo Fire – Fire 45.  It was nice to be reunited with Chalean!!!

Kansas to Abilene, TX – 8.5 hours in the car – GOOD TIMES!!!!

The boys took a few (like 500) pictures during our drive – don’t worry, I’m not going to include all of them!

Jordan feels the need to try and freeze me out in the car – I had my temp set at 72 (because I was in the sun and it was 95 outside) and he had his side at Low (60) – and then he uses a blanket – nice!!!

Hunter probably took 200 pictures (or more) of Jordan during the day – I guess he wanted to make sure and document any changes during the day!!JordanNear Lawton, OK there are a few miles where it looks like there is a mountain (ok – hill) range nearby.Screen shot 2013-06-23 at 8.11.02 PM

Hunter did take a few pictures that weren’t Jordan – not sure exactly what all he was trying to get but….Screen shot 2013-06-23 at 8.15.15 PMAfter about 6 hours of driving, we made it to God’s Country!!!Screen shot 2013-06-23 at 9.30.11 PMWhen the boys weren’t entertaining themselves and each other with their picture taking skills, they were pretend sleeping.  I guess trips with teen-agers involve more sleeping than trips with small children.  I had to find ways to keep myself busy – music and self-portraits!KimFinally, 8.5 hours after we left home we made it to Abilene!

The boys enjoyed a couple hours of swimming while I unloaded the car, enjoyed a nice happy hour drink and relaxed a little!!

Today will include more swimming for the boys and time with my 98 year-old Poppa!!!

Happy Monday!

My Running Story

Today’s 43 was one that I got from Nellie at Brooklyn Active Mama.  Every Wednesday she features a new exercise (and she has had some great ones!!).  This past week she had dumbbell reaches as the move and since I had never done this exact move I decided to try it.

This is a move that isn’t about speed – it’s all about control!!  It will work your core, hamstrings and shoulder and, because I did all 43 reps on one leg before switching side, I also felt it in my standing hip!!

The move is similar to a single leg dead-lift.  You hinge from the waist, pick up a dumbbell from the floor in front of you (I used 5 pounds), stand while bringing knee up and pushing DB overhead, then hinge back down and put the DB on the floor before standing = 1 rep. The video shows the move much better than I can explain it!!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czvX9Dne_RY’]

This move took awhile to complete because it is supposed to be slow and controlled!!  And, you know that I had to do 2 sets of 43 so that I can try to stay semi-balanced!!!

I also ran – 4 miles in 25:37 + 0.5 miles cool down.  Nice to run again!!!  Today I stayed on the treadmill because it was super early and I hadn’t told the boys I was going out.

Screen shot 2013-06-22 at 5.26.08 PM

I started running when I was 15 – my sophomore year in high school – go Eagles!!!  For the record, that means I’ve been running for 28 years!!!

Screen shot 2013-06-22 at 5.24.31 PM

I signed up for track/athletics as a class for the entire year but I really thought that I would just hang out in the fall and wait for track in the spring.  I had big plans – I was going to run the quarter mile!

Screen shot 2013-06-22 at 5.29.18 PMThe track coach convinced me to go ahead and run with the cross country team.  I agreed even though I had no idea what cross country was!!!  The first day of practice, we just had to run to a nearby park and back – 1 mile.  I had to stop and walk 3 times!!  But, I stuck with it and by the time we went to our first meet, I was the top runner on our team!

By the time track season came around, everyone knew that I wouldn’t be running the quarter mile – I ran the 2-mile and the mile.  And, it turned out that I was good at them!!

I ran all through high school – cross country and track were the best part of high school for me – I never missed practice or a meet no matter what!!!  I had several injuries (Achilles tendonitis, torn calf muscle and stress fractures in both tibias) but kept running!

Screen shot 2013-06-22 at 5.40.21 PMI received several different offers for college track scholarships and eventually settled on Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, TX.  During the time I ran there, we were

Screen shot 2013-06-22 at 7.11.19 PMRunning on a scholarship changed how I felt about running – it became a job instead of something that I loved.  At the end of my junior year I gave up my scholarship and ran my senior year just because I loved it.  As a result, I had my best seasons ever (CC, indoor and outdoor!).

I continued running after I graduated from college.  I ran road races almost every weekend when I was in Grad school (in southern Alabama) – 5Ks, 10Ks, a couple 8Ks and a half marathon (my favorite distance).

After grad school, I coached 2 years at Wayland (I was the distance coach)!  This was so much fun!!!  I ran with the team every morning at 6am and did all of the distance runs with them.  Some days I even got to get back on the track and do speed work with the athletes!!!

After leaving Wayland, I continued to run and do races occasionally.   I ran through both of my pregnancies (Chris kept telling the DR that I was running too hard but….).

When Hunter was about a few months old, I decided to sign up for a marathon throughScreen shot 2013-06-22 at 7.21.00 PMI was going to run the Disney Marathon (January 2002).  I did all of the fund-raising and 2 months before the race I started having hip pain to the point where I could barely walk. It turned out to be a stress fracture in my right hip.  (My orthopedic DR wanted me on crutches but that was impossible with a 7 month old!)  I spent 6 months not running and only doing minimal walking.

As a side note – I had trained for a marathon in college (Dallas White Rock) and ended up sick with bronchitis and a sinus infection the week of the race so I didn’t run that one either.

After I started running again I decided to just run for me and not to race.  Even at that, I have had 3 stress fractures in my right foot and 1 stress fracture in my left hip in the past 10 years.

Screen shot 2013-06-22 at 7.32.42 PM

I added in weight training and lots of cross-training after I turned 35 (YIKES – 8 years ago!!) and that has made a huge difference in my running.  I can’t run every day but I’m running stronger and faster now than when I was a college athlete!!!

I have done lots of mega runs (usually on my treadmill).  I have done distances of 30, 50 and 35 miles in previous years during the Relay for Life (I’m usually our team’s designated walker/runner).  3 years ago, I did 60 miles in 2 days (I did it virtually with a group who did the Susan G. Komen walk in Dallas).  I started my birthday runs (running my age on my birthday) when I turned 42.

About a month ago (after I had my veins stripped) running was hard, I didn’t enjoy it and it hurt a lot. I decided to take a little running break because I never want to hate running. Screen shot 2013-06-22 at 7.33.52 PMNow, my break is over and I’m ready to run again!!

Good thing since I have my first ultra in 4 short months!!Screen shot 2013-06-22 at 7.38.53 PMAnd that is my running story (to date) – can’t wait to see what the future holds for me and running!!!Screen shot 2013-06-22 at 7.47.39 PM

Happy Sunday!!  The boys and I are off to TX  today to see my Poppa and Dad while Chris is on his trip.  (9 hours of driving here we come!!!)

Final Thoughts on Insanity: The Asylum

Today’s 43 was as much  about stretching as anything!!!  I did a side lunge with a toe touch and counted a right lunge and left lunge as 1 rep so it was 43 each side.

Lunge right
Lunge right

Here is a side view – all my weight is back in my butt (pretty much true all the time but especially when I lunge and squat!!).

lunge left

Nice to do a move that doesn’t require a lot of jumping!!

Today I did my last Insanity Asylum workout – the Fit Test.  I did this same test  the day before I started the program and now after completing the program – I improved in all 9 drills!!!

Each move/exercise is done for 1 minute.  6 of the 9 drills use the agility ladder – Agility Ladder

#1 – Agility Heisman  –  (using ladder) I went from 7 to 9.5

#2 – In & Out Abs  – these are all done to the 2nd rung – I went from 20 to 35

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wwAhBLoDw0′]

#3 – Lateral Push-Ups (alt. sides) – 16 to 25

#4 – Standing Mountain Climber Switch Kicks – (heel has to come up above waist to count) – 54 to 70

#5 – Agility Push-ups (using ladder – down & back = 1 rep – touch hand to opp. shoulder for each move) – 4 to 6.5

#6 – X Jumps (squat down and touch toes – jump into X) – 42 to 49

#7 – Moving Push-Ups (using ladder – down & back = 1 rep) – I went from 3 to 5

#8 – Agility Heisman (different version than #1) – 11 to 15.5

#9 – Bear Crawls (with ladder – hop feet in at top and hands in at bottom) – I went from 7 to 10

Calvin & Hobbs sum up perfectly how I feel to be completely done with Insanity!!!  I think the program is great but it was HARD!!!  At some point in about 20 years in  the next year or so, I will probably go through the program again but for now I need a break from it!!!

My favorite thing about both Insanity and Insanity: The Asylum is Shaun T when Shaun T says “Dig Deeper!!!”Screen shot 2013-06-22 at 8.45.48 AMI will keep telling myself that while I move on to other workouts and finally get back to running!!! (I’ve been on a running break to try to reclaim my love of running – part of why I’ve been so focused on this crazy program!!)

And, on the running front – I’m ready to get back at it!!!  Yesterday I even got these cool  shoes because I needed figured that it was as good a time as any to add another pair to my collection.

Love the colors!!!
Love the colors!!!

I haven’t run in Asics since college (that’s been a LONG time!!!) but the guys (at the store) convinced me to give these a try and see how they compare to Mizunos so I agreed because I love the colors!!! (oh, and they feel good, too)

Gotta get moving on Saturday – lots to do today!!  Chris just left for a trip – I can’t say where all he is going but I will say that this

Screen shot 2013-06-22 at 8.53.40 AMis involved in part of the trip.   I’m trying really hard not to be jealous!!!  The boys and I will  spend some of our day here

Choices and Why I Work out First thing

Today I tried a new (to me) move for my 43 – sumo dead-lifts.  I’ve seen these in a lot of other workouts but just never tried them because I really love regular dead-lifts.  I liked these OK but still prefer the standard method!!

To do the sumo lifts, I used 15 pound dumbbells and started with my legs wider than hip distance, toes turned out.

start

From here, I did slow (2-count down & 2-count up) dead lift.

down
down

I couldn’t go down as far as a regular dead-lift because of the angle of my legs.

side view

I could feel it in my glutes but not my hamstrings as much as a straight leg dead lift.  I did like the move – this is the kind of thing that makes a fairly easy 43!!

Today was double Boot Camp – 6 am backyard BC and 7:15 am beach BC!!!  Because I’m the only crazy one who did both, it was the same workout each time.  I wanted everyone to get a great workout because I’m going to be gone next week and I’m pretty sure today’s  boot camp accomplished that!!!  We did a pyramid – up and down  – fun stuff!!!

I still need to do the Insanity Asylum Fit Test to see if I improved from before I started the program but I’m going to save it for tomorrow instead of doing it after 2 rounds of boot camp – seems like a much better idea!!!

Screen shot 2013-06-21 at 8.48.19 AM

All day long we are faced with choices.  Some are little and simple – what to eat for breakfast, what to wear (not always that simple, but….), go to the beach or the pool…..Other choices can be harder – get up early or sleep in, buy a new top or 3 new tops not, quit working, start a new job……..

One of the choices that I made years ago was to workout first thing in the morning (even when it means getting up at the butt crack of dawn)!!For me that works well with my life because then no matter what comes up during the day, I don’t have  to worry about when or if I’m going to be able to workout.  Screen shot 2013-06-21 at 9.26.25 AM

Yesterday, for example, a friend sent me a text me in the morning and asked if Chris and I wanted to meet her and husband atScreen shot 2013-06-21 at 8.56.16 AMfor dinner and drinks.  Well, I had planned to go to Zumba cause it’s sort-of addicting or something!!!  Screen shot 2013-06-21 at 9.04.05 AM

However, it was Screen shot 2013-06-21 at 9.07.20 AMand a chance to catch up with some friends – plus  I had already made the choice to get my workout done in the morning and Zumba is more of just a social outing (active for sure!) so I made the choice to spend some time with Chris and some friends!!!

And because of the choices I made earlier in the day I enjoyed the evening guilt-free!!!Screen shot 2013-06-21 at 9.12.09 AMThings come up and life happens – sometimes fun stuff and other times just normal everyday stuff and we will always have choices to make.  There are times that I wish I had made better or different choices but yesterday I was happy with my choices!!!

Choices – what will you do today?

Happy Fun Friday!!

Home Alone

Today’s 43 was a standing oblique crunch.  The nice thing about doing standing core work is that I always feel it in my hip flexors which need all the strengthening they can get.

To do the side crunch:

start

crunch to the right
crunch to the right – tap toe & repeat

I did all 43 on the right side and then switched and did another set of 43 on the left.

I did the last full workout in Insanity Asylum – Speed and Agility (brutal but I made it!!!). This morning, I was stalling because I was dreading it for some reason – oh, yeah – because it is so hard!!!  I pretty much dragged through the warm-up but then sucked it up and got it done!!!costanza-clappingNow all that I have left to finish the program is the final fit test!!!

Today was also beach Boot Camp – we did the Band workout.  Resistance bands and sand combined are sure to make for a great workout!!!  (plus, my arms were tired today!!)

Screen shot 2013-06-19 at 8.43.18 PMLast night was the first time that I have been home alone in 4 weeks.  I know that might not seem like a big deal but I went from being the only one home during the day for the entire school year to having my 2  boys with me all the time.

Screen shot 2013-06-19 at 8.46.02 PM

I love spending lots of time with my boys but I also enjoy some time alone every once in awhile.  And, being home alone – even if it’s only for an hour – means I can sit with my laptop and watch one of my favorite mindless reality shows –

Screen shot 2013-06-19 at 9.08.50 PMYep – I watch for the drama as much as the dancing!!!

Since Chris has a TDY coming up, it will be weeks before I’m home by myself again which is fine but tonight I did a littlehappy-dance2happy dance and enjoyed my hour alone – guilt free!!

Do you like to be home alone/hate it/never experienced it?

Happy Thursday!!!
