Snap Judgements

Today’s 43 was all about working my obliques.  I did an oblique crunch with an arm reach and an extended leg (confused?  watch the demo)

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6eqIFeESQ4′]

I counted a right and left crunch as 1 rep so a total of 86 crunches!!

I decided to go with a fun workout today because I’m SORE (must be from the heavy lifting yesterday)!!  I did Turbo Jam – Cardio Party 2.  I’ve said many times – I love to work out with Chalean!!!  The workouts are always fast paced and so much fun that they go quickly!!

Screen shot 2013-07-07 at 9.23.07 AMI think at different times we have all formed snap judgements about other people (or even about things) and I’m sure that we have all been on the other end  and been the person judged.

Screen shot 2013-07-07 at 9.25.57 AMYears ago, I was interviewing for a teaching job.  The job was as an 8th grade science teacher and I really wanted to work at that particular school.  The principal and the head of the science department were both involved in the interview.  The guy that was the head of the science department was completely against hiring me for 1 reason –Screen shot 2013-07-07 at 9.37.49 AM

I was also going to be a coach (7th & 8th girls volleyball, basketball & track).  The minute he found out that I was a coach he was ready to end the interview.  I explained to both of them that I became a teacher first and would have taught even if I didn’t coach.

I got the job and after about a month, this same teacher came to me and apologized for automatically assuming that I wouldn’t be a good teacher since I was a coach!

That experience has always stuck with me because I was judged by someone who didn’t know anything about me.  I try to remember how I felt and not make the same mistakes.Screen shot 2013-07-07 at 9.27.56 AM

Sometimes our snap judgements cause us to miss out on some really great things.

I’ve known many people who won’t even try avocados or guacamole because they don’t like the color and the way it looks.  They are truly missing out on something wonderful just because they are judging the taste by the color.

Often we judge people by what they drive or the clothes they wear but we don’t know the background on how they got that vehicle or where their clothes came from.

It’s so easy to make a little comment – look how overgrown their yard is – why don’t they do anything about it?  But, without knowing the story – they might have a loved one fighting for their life in the hospital, or they might have lost their job and ended up working 3 different jobs to make ends meet – we really shouldn’t be so quick to judge!Screen shot 2013-07-07 at 9.48.45 AM
So, my goal is to try and stop making snap judgements about anything – new products, food, and especially other people.   Just like I sometimes tell my boys – You can’t say you don’t like something if you’ve never tried it!!!  And, I shouldn’t say (or think) unkind things about people without knowing their story!

Good-Bye 2012

The final 43 of 2012 involved my

BOSU
BOSU

Today I did an L-step to the right with a knee raise and oblique crunch, L-step off the back with a knee raise and oblique crunch, repeat to left side and back = 1 rep.

You can tell from the video that I included a knee raise and crunch as often as possible.  I enjoyed this 43 – it got my heart rate up some but was still low-impact!

I did day 6 of the 12 Days of Fitness – today added in 6 pull-ups. (I had to do the assisted kind!)

Today instead of doing a work-out, I closed out my work-out log for the year.  It was a pretty consistent year of working out for me – 291 days!!!  (if all I did was the daily 43, that did not count as a work-out day)   Only 78 days of running (stupid stress fracture/hip pain!!!) but I did get a total of 694.7 miles so that is 8.9 as a daily average!!!  Hopefully I will stay injury free in 2013!!

Some highlights of 2012:

  • Quit my job in June (happy & a little sad)
  • family trip to Florida   in June
  • Great Wolf Lodge with boys
  • Sam & Stacy up for 4th of July
  • family trip to Texas in July – spent lots of time with my 98 year-old Poppa
  • Hunter broke his arm (he handled it very well!) – end of July
  • family trip to Denver in August
  • started this blog in mid September!!
  • quick trip to TX – shopping with my sister – early October
  • lots of time spent together as a family – Chris wasn’t deployed at all this past year!!!

Looking forward to a great new year in 2013!!!Screen shot 2012-12-31 at 9.37.53 AM

I’m going to try to remember this quote every day!!!  I truly want 2013 to be the year that I live my life in the moment and not spend all of my time looking ahead (or behind)!

Happy end of 2012!!!

The Librarian

Today my 43 really worked my obliques!  I used my stability ball again.  I put my back on the ball and my feet on the wall at a right angle.  With my hands behind my head, I crunched to the left and reached my right hand outside my left knee and then crunched the opposite way to make 1 rep.  So, in order to complete my 43,  I actually did 86 oblique crunches!!

(The boys helped me out over the weekend with several demos.  I wanted to be ready for the busy week ahead so we made the videos and then each morning I can do the actual 43.)

After the 43 I did some Pilates but I actually mixed it up and did some new stuff.  First I did the mat segment from Burn & Firm Pilates – 10 minutes.  This DVD uses hand weights with the pilates work which is kind of nice.  Then I did the mat segment from Fat Burning Pilates – 15 minutes.  Finally I did the total body segment from  Pick Your Spot Pilates – 10 minutes.

All of these were still non-weight bearing!   It was a nice change of pace on the pilates front because all of these work-outs have ab, butt and thigh work all mixed together instead of in separate sections.

Screen shot 2012-12-17 at 7.05.36 AMCan you guess what I’m going to be doing this week?  I’m not technically the librarian but I will be working in the school library.  I’m not going to be at Hunter’s school – I will be at one of the other elementary schools in our district.  I’m filling in for the library aide – this week and then most of January.  I’m super excited!!!  I love everything about books and I think this will be a really fun job!

Between spending my days in the school library and my evenings tutoring algebra (finals week for high school) – this week is going to be BUSY!!!

I better get going – still need to get dinner in the crock pot before we all leave for the day!

Happy Monday!
