How do you Know if you Are Pushing Too Hard?

Today I went with a basketball inspired 43 in honor of the NBA Finals!  We (all but Jordan) are rooting for the Spurs!!!

The move requires a medicine ball (I used an 8 pound ball), or you could use a dumbbell, and has several parts:

  • lunge forward with right leg
  • pass ball under right leg
  • lunge back with right leg
  • pass ball under left leg
  • bring feet together
  • jump and press ball overhead

After completing 43 as listed above, I had to switch and do the lunges with my left leg for another set!

This was really a great combo 43 – worked my quads, calves, shoulders and even my upper back some work – plus because I moved fairly quickly, I got my heart rate up!!!

I woke up around 4:30 this morning to a pretty heavy rain so I wasn’t sure if anyone would come to Boot Camp this morning.  However, since today’s workout was at my house, we had the garage option (necessary today since not only was it raining, there was some thunder and lightening!).  I had a few show up and we had a good workout.  Today we did a really fun workout – Tabata Boot Camp!!!

After that I had Insanity Asylum – and I was sort-of dreading it today.  Today was Game Day (60 minutes of every possible sport) and Overtime (15 minutes designed to kill really challenge you).  Game Day actually  goes pretty quickly because you keep changing the sport (really it’s just moves that might be used in different sports).  And, I felt like I accomplished way more in Overtime today than last week – but the moves are still beyond brutal!!!!

I feel like the past few weeks, I have been living by the above motto.  Doing Insanity with Shaun T – you hear the phrase “Dig Deeper”  a LOT!!!  And, even though I’m in my basement living room with no one around (except Jordan who usually watches me to make sure I don’t die cheat) I feel like I have to push a little harder every time I hear those words.  Move my feet faster, jump higher, eek out a few more push-ups – doesn’t matter what it is, I just try to push myself even more!!

Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.18.06 AMI agree that you have to work hard to become who you want to be but at what point do you decide that maybe you need to back off just a little?  Do you have to change your goals and “settle” for less or do you just change the time-line for your goals?

Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.22.56 AMWe see quotes like the one above, or hear fitness professionals telling us to push as hard as we can and then push just a little harder.  But sometimes you need to hear – Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.42.26 AM

We all have different limits and amounts that we can tolerate.  I like to push myself hard almost everyday.  By pushing hard – I mean to the point of saying “I’m done.  I can’t do another _________ (rep, lap, mile, whatever).”

Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.21.11 AMFor others, pushing hard is something that can only occasionally be tolerated either because of health/injury or sometimes because of not being mentally prepared for the pain of pushing your limits.  And, there are some, who are willing to work but only to a certain level and have absolutely zero desire to push themselves any harder.   Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.27.40 AMPushing too hard for too long can lead to overtraining or burn-out.  (click the link for a great article in Runner’s World about overtraining).

I’m pretty sure if you look, or even feel, like thisScreen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.27.22 AMthen it is probably time to ease up and give yourself a little slack.

Screen shot 2013-06-17 at 9.22.37 AMSo, just because you see or hear the message to push harder all the time, remember to do what is right for you and your own personal limits.  Sometimes you feel weak because you have pushed harder than you should and it is time to back off a little.  It’s all about knowing your body and listening to the messages it gives you!!

Do you feel like you ever push too hard?  Is it easy for you to back off when you need to or do you try to push through?

Happy Monday!!!  I’m going to cut myself a little slack today – I hope you do the same if you need to!!!

Fun Friday!!!

For my 43 today I did a move that Gina (the Fitnessista) had as part of a really cool 2,4,6,8,10 workout earlier this week.

To do the move, start in plank (arms extended) – lift your right leg and tap it down across your left leg then switch legs to complete 1 rep.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssXX7WA8Ewc’]

It took me 3:20 minutes (holding plank the whole time) to complete 43 reps!  The hard part was trying not to rock my body or drop my hips (or stick my butt too high).  If you add a boost to a normal plank – try this move!

Because I’ve sort-of slacked on workouts the past couple of days I decided to step it up a bit with  Cathe XTrain – Tabatacise.  I did all 5 Tabatas (killer!) then I did the 100 Rep challenges – 100 flat bench triceps (I used 8 pound dumbbells) & 100 bicep curls (10 pound dumbbells) – UGH!!!  I finished with the Bonus Core #2.

When I finished Jordan said, “That looked hard – I’m never gonna do that!”  (no school today & Chris is off so the gangs all here!!)  OK, Jordan, whatever!!  I did convince him to go for a walk with me yesterday afternoon so there is that!!

I’m looking forward to the weekend!  The weather is supposed to be nice for a few more days (and then maybe snow on April 1 – what is that about?!), the NCAA basketball tournament is going on, Easter – time with all 3 of my boys – what more could anyone ask for?!

Happy Fun Friday – I hope everyone has a great weekend with family and/or friends!

What’s Your Favorite Exercise or Move?

Today is my 180th consecutive day of the daily 43!!!  I’m enjoying my daily adventures and have so many ideas but I’m always looking for new things – please share any moves or exercises that you think would make a fun 43.  Thanks!!

For the 43 today I did a front-kick and back-kick combo.  (I already did a similar move except last time it was the same leg that kicked front & back.)  So,  today I did a right front kick and a left back kick for the first set of 43 and then switched and did a left front kick and right back kick for another 43.

This was a good 43 after yesterday’s brutal one!!!

Today I tried another Cathe DVD – XTrain – Tabatacise!!  I did all 5 of the Tabatas and Bonus Core #1.  This workout is on my list of favorites (I know it’s a longish list but….)!  Even though the Tabatas are intense, the time flies by (especially the 10 second recovery!!).  If you like to jump – this workout is definitely for you!!!

(Tabata training is a form of HIIT – high intensity interval training.  It is a 4 minute segment consisting of 20 seconds of super high intensity followed by 10 seconds of recovery.)

Yesterday afternoon I convinced Chris and Jordan to try the 3 ball push-up.  Hunter was going to try but once he put his hands on the ball he realized that his wrist (he broke it the end of July) still wasn’t quite strong enough.

OK - I'm balanced - now what?

Chris did 10 (without falling off in between any of them!).

pretty good

I think Jordan did 2 but he may have just done 1.  Either way – Good job, guys!!!

I really am open to ideas/suggestions for exercises – I love to try new moves or a classic move in a different way.  Feel free to send me links to some of your favorites!

Happy Thursday!
