Pictures of some Happy Times!!!

Today for my 43 I met Stacey (my sister-in-law) in the hotel fitness center (not much there but we made it work!!).  I started out with 43 minutes on one of my least favorite machines – the elliptical – Screen shot 2013-08-24 at 8.04.55 AM

Then, since Stacey was doing her WOD, (run 1 mile, 100 hand-release push-ups, run 1 mile, 100 low squats with hands over head, run 1 mile 100 butterfly sit-ups, run 1 mile) I decided to do all the moves for 43 reps!!!

43 hand release push-ups (these are hard!!!) – Stacey let me film her for the demo!!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90NLesl_DLY’]

43 butterfly sit-ups – no picture because Stacey was running – but these are with your feet together – a full sit-up – I put my hands over my head on the down part and touched my toes on the up part.

43 low squats keeping my hands up above my head the entire time – I usually only squat to 90 but today I actually did these by dropping my butt lower – I might be sore when I drive home tonight!!!

It was fun to workout with Stacey – we like to do similar things so it is always a good time!!!

Still spotty internet but I did get some pictures uploaded from yesterday!!

Train your Brain

Today for my 43 I did incline push-ups.  (probably not the best choice because I had already done lots of push-ups in my challenge workout but….)

Pretty basic today but push-ups are always good!!!!

This is the 6th (and final) week of Taylor’s challenge – and it is a good one for sure!!!  I still have 2 more chances to try and lower my time!!!

I decided to run today – my Achilles has been sore for a long time now and I’m trying to make sure that it doesn’t get worse while still training.  Anyway, I ran on my treadmill today – 1.5% incline – 6 miles 35:31.  I did a progression type run – increasing my time every 30 seconds – a fun way to make the time go quickly and push myself at the same time.

Yesterday I read several articles and posts about the benefits of exercise on your brain.  I’ve also read a lot of things about the importance of training your brain.  And, since it is back to school (or close) I thought it would be fun to have some brain challenges today!!!

1.  o t t f f  – What are the next 3 letters in the sequence?

2.  d n o s – What are the next 3 letters in this sequence?

3.  What’s lighter than a feather but even the strongest person in the world can only hold it for a few minutes?

4.  What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries?

5.  I can run but not walk. Wherever I go, thought follows close behind. What am I?

6.  What goes around the world but stays in a corner?

7.  The man who invented it doesn’t want it. The man who bought it doesn’t need it. The man who needs it doesn’t know it. What is it?

8.  What English word has three consecutive double letters?

9.  Say my name and I disappear.  What am I?

Can you solve these?  Feel free to share a riddle – I love trying to figure them out!!!

Happy Tuesday!!!

Packed Sand or Loose Sand for Working Out?

Today I did my 43 on the beach!  It was hard!!  I did a burpee with a tuck jump (although my tucks are not very high!).

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCSfRRoiuA4′]

It is HARD to jump up high in the sand!!  This was a 43 that pretty much worked my entire body.

I also did my 2nd round of this week’s workout with Taylor’s challenge.  I’m pretty sure that I’m doing the wrong workout this week but I decided to just stick with it because it is perfect for vacation – the one part that requires weights I can use my bands.  This is the workout that has 1000 total reps (700 are mountain climbers!).  Tuesday it took 14:13 and today I crushed my time – 12:23!!

And, because we are on vacation and I’m trying to maximize time, that was the extent of my work out!!  Not gonna lie – working out for less than 30 minutes is not my normal and I’m trying really hard to be OK with the fact that if I go all-out for a short amount of time (HIIT) then I don’t need to work out for hours.  Still working on the whole guilt thing!!

Burning Question:

In my 43 video today, you can see that I worked out in the loose heavy sand.  I think it’s much more difficult to perform moves that require any jumping in the loose sand.  However, when I was doing the burpees this morning, I had someone tell me that I should do them on the packed sand to really get the full benefit.

So – what do you think?  More benefits from trudging through the loose sand or the packed sand?

And – you know I have to post some more beach pictures!!

My Favorite Way to Cook

I decided it was time for another burpee variation for the 43 today.  I’m still working on the awesome list of 30 burpees that Taylor @ Lifting Revolution shared awhile back.  Today I did a burpee with a lateral jump over a step – FUN TIMES!!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQT6e33BNuM’]

6:00 am boot camp was fun – we did the Move It, Move It workout (all legs!!) from Friday because I knew that none of the people who came Friday would be here this morning.  It was HUMID  – we were drenched by the end of the workout.

I decided to run on my treadmill instead of outside because I knew that I would be sucking air thanks to the mugginess.  I ran at 1.5% incline – 5 miles 31:34 + 1 mile super easy for a cool down.

Irving Naxon  – anyone know who he is?  He developed the “all-purpose” cooker which was bought by The Rival Company in 1970 and reintroduced in 1971 as the Crock Pot.

a few of the crock pots I use
a few of the crock pots I use

I think the Crock Pot is truly  my favorite kitchen appliance!!!  I use one of my crock pots at least once a week and often as many as 3 times a week.  There have been many meals that I have 2 crock pots full of stuff!!!

Any day that I have evening plans I try to get dinner into the crock pot in the morning.  Such a great feeling to know that dinner (at least part of it) is already done!!!

I’m pretty sure that I’ve already shared my love of cookbooks before.Cookbooks

CookbooksIn my collection, I have a whole shelf devoted to crock pot/slow cooker cook books.  My favorites are from the Fix-It-and-Forget-It series.Screen shot 2013-07-07 at 8.48.52 PM

One of the great things about using a crock pot is there is really no need for a recipe.  The thing that I do the most is put a cut of meat (ribs, round steak, roast, brisket, chicken breasts, pork roast, turkey breasts, even a whole chicken) with a rub and/or a sauce of some sort and let it cook all day.  Super easy and by the end of the day we have a very tender piece of meat!

In the fall and winter I make all kinds of soups and chili in the crock pot.  In the summer, I love to use the crock pot to keep the kitchen from heating up!!

I even take one of my crock pots with me on some of our longer trips (when we stay places with a kitchen) so that we don’t have to eat out every meal and I don’t have to spend any time really cooking.

Do you use a crock pot very often?  What is your favorite recipe in the crock pot?

Happy Monday!!

Kim

Memorial Day – so much more than just the start of summer!!!

Today’s 43 took a standard move (the push-up) and used it in a whole new way (at least for me!!).  I did Frog Push-ups!!!

To do these, start with your legs bent at 90 with just your toes on the ground.  Hands are in normal push-up position.  The only thing that really moves are your arms when you bend your elbows down.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KCrqYIsHIg’]

This was a fun 43 and I loved the extra shoulder benefit of this push-up!!!

Today I finally started a program that I have put off for close to 2 years – Insanity Asylum. I’ve done Insanity a couple of times (the entire 60 day program) but it’s been awhile.  These programs have the names they do for a reason – they are intense and not for the weak of heart!!!  I can tell that I lost a lot of conditioning the past month so I figured the Asylum would be just the thing to push me!!!

Today was just the first assessment or Fit Test.  25 minutes with a very short warm-up, 9 different drills for 1 minute each and a short cool down.  A lot of these moves were new to me because it takes a more traditional move and combines it with some agility training!!  Not easy!!!  Gonna have to work hard this month!!

Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, not to be confused with  Veterans Day which celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.Screen shot 2013-05-26 at 7.34.17 PM

On Memorial Day the United States flag is raised to the top of the staff and then  lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains  until noon. Flag - half mast It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.  The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.  (from Wikipedia)US Flag We might not all know someone personally who has lost their life while serving our country,  but we can still honor the memory of all who have fought for our country and given their lives.Screen shot 2013-05-26 at 7.34.36 PMIt is also a day that the families who have lost a member (or members) should be remembered since they have made a huge sacrifice for our country.Screen shot 2013-05-26 at 7.33.29 PMSo, whether you are spending the day on the lake, at the ballpark or just hanging out with friends, family and good food – take a few minutes to remember all the many military members who have given their lives for the freedom that we often take for granted!!!Screen shot 2013-05-26 at 7.33.55 PM

Happy Memorial Day!!
