Why do I stay up till midnight?

Today for my 43 I decided to do a move that Kristen @ Stuft Mama demoed.  This move involves one of my favorite pieces of equipment –

BOSU
BOSU

Kristen called the move a scissor move on the BOSU – I’m not sure if I did it exactly the way she did but either way it is an incredible way to work your core!!

Just balancing myself was a challenge!!!

I counted a right leg up and a left leg up as 1 rep.  43 of these were hard!!  And, I had to hold lightly to the ball otherwise I kept rolling off!!!

I also taught Garage Boot Camp this morning.  We did another repeat workout – 7 mini workouts or 1 Super Boot Camp one of my favorites!!!  (I really do have a lot of favorites, I guess – oh, well all the favorites match all of my exclamation points!!!)

I decided to do another short run – I’m so happy that I’ve been able to run on consecutive days again.  I’m trying to not get too crazy with the running though because I have some big runs coming up – 44 miles in about 2.5 weeks (birthday run) and 50 miles in mid October – no time to end up injured due to running too much!!

Today I just did 5 total miles – 4 hard (24:19) + 1 much easier (almost 12 minutes) all with a 1.5% incline.  Other than my left Achilles which stays swollen all the time, my legs are feeling really good these days!!!

For the past 6 years, I have become one of those people who gets up at the butt crack of  dawn and therefore, I rarely stay up past 10:00pm.  This works well because Chris has gotten up early forever so he likes to go to bed fairly early, too.

However, lately, I haven’t had time during  the day to spend blogging so when Chris (and the boys) go to bed at night I sit down with my laptop (and HGTV!) to play catch-up.  All good until this happens –

Screen shot 2013-08-28 at 11.45.54 PMMidnight!!!  12:00 am!!! 5 short hours before my alarm will start screeching at me and I will start all over with another day!!!

Screen shot 2013-08-28 at 11.50.44 PMYikes – how did it get to be so late with me still up?!  And why am I up?  Maybe tonight will be the night that I don’t ring in the new day!!!  (doubtful but…..)

How late do you stay up on a normal night?
What time do you get up in the mornings?
Alarm or natural wake up?
How many hours do you generally sleep at night?
(I’m to the point where it is rarely more than 6 & staying up till midnight is making it even less!)

Happy Thursday!

Who Helped Make You the Person You Are Today?

For my 43 today I did a side plank with a front reach – pretty much just what it sounds like.

I really liked this move – I could feel it in my core, hips and shoulders!!!  And, you know that I had to flip and do a set of 43 on the other side!!

I tried to make sure and keep my hips lifted the entire time – I was shaking by the end of each set – success!!!

I also started up Garage boot camp this morning!  It has to be in the garage because at 6:00am it is dark outside now.  I just have a few ladies who asked me if we could keep going with boot camp even though summer is over so we are going to try it for awhile.  Today we did a repeat boot camp –  ABC Boot Camp!!!

After boot camp, I did a super quick run before taking Hunter to school.  Treadmill at 1.5% incline – 3 miles fast + 1 cool down mile for a total of 4 miles in 30:05.  I’m sure Hunter was thrilled to hop in the car with his sweaty mom!!

Screen shot 2013-08-26 at 10.00.30 PMWe all have people in our lives that have helped mold us into the person we are today.  It might be your parents,

or any other person who has been a major influence in your life.

Some of you might be sitting there thinking – “Yep, I know exactly the person who has helped shape me into who I am.”  Others are probably thinking that there are too many different people and you can’t pick just one.  And, some of you might not know yet who you would credit with helping you develop into the person you are or want to be.

For me, I know exactly who has made me the person that I am – my grandparents!!!

Mema & Poppa
Mema & Poppa

Growing up, I spent every second I could with my grandparents – when we lived in other states it was harder but I loved and cherished every visit!!!

The summer before I started 9th grade, my parents got a divorce.  I lived with my grandparents that summer (and many after!).  Poppa taught me the things that my dad wasn’t around to teach me – how to build a book shelf, how to weed-eat, how to kill a rattle snake (I lived in west TX!!), how to drive, how to swim – the list could go on and on.

And, Mema taught me about life!!  She never met a stranger – from the check-out clerk at the grocery store, to the security guard at the mall, the small children at church and the oldest neighbor on the block – she would talk to anyone about pretty much anything.

Mema & Poppa

Mema always wanted to look at the person/people in the picture not the camera!!!  In all of our wedding pictures she is looking at me because she said everyone should look at the bride – at the time I didn’t totally understand – now I do and I think it is one of the best wedding gifts I received!

Poppa showed me every day the meaning of a true work ethic.  He was still working at 80+ because he loved being able to get out there and do things.  He taught me that any job – no matter how big or small – should be done to the very best of my abilities.  I try to live up to that standard today in all of my endeavors.

Because of issues/factors that I haven’t ever mentioned on my blog, my mom is not the person that I really ever tried to please.  However, any time that I felt like I let my grandparents down, I was devastated.  In fact, several years during my early 20s are the only period in my life that I didn’t talk at least once a week with Mema – and that was because I knew she didn’t approve of all of my choices and I hated knowing that I was disappointing her!!!

Mema & Poppa

The biggest thing I learned from my grandparents was how to really love someone.  They showed me true love every day of their lives!  They loved each other completely with no reservations and they loved me that same way.  There was never a second that I ever doubted the love my grandparents had for me.  Because of that love, I was able to open myself up to the love of a great guy – Chris, now my husband of 17+ years!

I’m blessed beyond belief to have had the amazing grandparents that I did.  Even though they are no longer with me, I know that the lessons I learned from them will remain and be something I continue to strive towards every day!!!

Who made you the person you are today?  What is the biggest thing you learned from them?

Happy Tuesday!!!

You Need Soap!

Today for my 43 I tried a move that Kat @ Sneakers and Fingerpaints did as part of her core challenge for the month.  The move is called a Squirm and it is a great move to really work your entire core!!!

Start on your back with knees bent, contract your abs and crunch up – hold the crunch and alternate reaching your hands to your feet (you will be squirming!).

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQERK6UDdog’]

I counted a right and left reach as 1 so it took a little while to complete all 43.  My obliques got a great workout and since I had my abs contracted the entire time, my whole core was feeling the move by the end!!!

Today was boot camp in the garage thanks to thunderstorms!!!  We did one of my favorites – Tabata Bootcamp.  I love how effective this workout is – short bursts at maximum intensity!!!

I also started week 5 of Taylor’s challenge.  This week’s workout is intense!!!  It is called – The Race Is On and it is a definite challenge!!!  I love the workouts that Taylor has included in this challenge – most are under 20 minutes and don’t require any equipment (or very little!).  They are great as an entire workout or as a supplement for the rest of my workout!!

Screen shot 2013-08-12 at 8.23.34 AMSo,  earlier this summer when the boys and I took our trip to Texas, Jordan caught me off-guard with one of his comments.

There was some traffic at one point and I’m sure that there must have been some crazy drivers doing stupid things and I might have said a cuss word or two.  Well, Jordan is very anti-cussing and he looked over at me and said – “You need soap!”

I looked at him – Screen shot 2013-08-12 at 8.28.46 AM

and then just busted out laughing!! Screen shot 2013-08-12 at 8.36.56 AMEver since then,  it has been a bit of a joke – any time Jordan hears a bad word (no matter who says it) he looks at me and says “soap“.

So, the other night, Jordan took his shower and then came into the living room with Chris and I.  We were watching the very end of some show and Jordan just started ringing the drink bell repeatedly!!!

Jordan loves to ring this over & over!
Jordan loves to ring this over & over!

It was pretty annoying because it was right by my ear.  I was trying to be nice – but after about 5 minutes of the annoying bell I said something to the effect that I was going to throw the damn bell in the trash if he didn’t stop.  Next thing I know, Jordan pulls a bar of soap out of his pocket and sets it by the bell (and he has this huge grin on his face!).

Bell & SoapChris and I both just about fell out of our chairs laughing!!!  Jordan was so proud – he knew that he could break me and he was ready!!!!

I really do try not to cuss around the boys a lot but sometimes…..At least I don’t really get my mouth washed out with soap!  Growing up I did plenty of times (and I didn’t even cuss then!!) and it was always with the worst soap ever!!

Screen shot 2013-08-12 at 8.23.59 AMNasty and gritty – not  fun!!  I have never washed my boys mouth out with soap because I have awful memories of having it done to me.

Do you have a “word” police in your home?  Have you ever had your mouth washed out with soap?

Happy Monday!!!

Friday Funnies

For my 43 today I went with a plank move!  I did an elbow plank with an inward twisting knee – alternating sides until I had done 43 with each knee.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A30hBZrA5ds’]

This was a nice move  – you can tell in the video that I had to work hard to stay level and not let my butt come up too much.

I also taught Boot Camp again  – we did a repeat from earlier in the summer!  Today we did the 5-4-3-2-1 workout.  This workout has lots of moving squats and walking lunges plus some running – perfect for helping get rid of the residual soreness (and pain!) in my quads.  I think it actually helped because I can almost run up and down the stairs again!!!

Just for Fun Friday:

Yep!
Sometimes this just happens
I love this!!!

Keeping Cool

Today’s 43 was a knee lift to a pivot lunge.  I like moves like this that are good strengthening moves but also really challenge my balance!

To do the move:  lift your right knee – pivot to the back corner – lunge – push off of the lunging foot – pivot back to front – tap toe and repeat (x 43).  And, then because no one wants to be lopsided – switch and do the same on with the left leg.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNOvH9owfaY’]

You can pretty much do whatever you want to with your arms – you can see that mine just sort of flail around trying to help me keep my balance!

6 am Boot Camp was the ABC workout again – even though we just did this last week, most of my group was on vacation and missed it so I brought it back today!!!  Plus, I like this one!!!  It was sort-of rough just because the humidity is out of control so breathing was hard for everyone.

I also did my 2nd round of Taylor’s challenge!!  I didn’t collapse onto the floor during it or even after but I wanted to!  The  whole workout only takes about 30 minutes but it is intense and AWESOME!!!

I’m sure that my next line won’t make me popular but I’m cool with that – I LOVE THE HEAT OF SUMMER!!!  I’m one of those people that might complains a little lot during the winter about the cold.  And if it snows and ices – don’t get me started!!!  But during the summer, I’m completely in my element and happy!!!

However, not everyone shares my point of view!!  The boys and I spend lots of time at the swim beach and different pools.  This summer they have also spent a lot of time outside playing basketball.  During the afternoons they have to sort-of limit how long at a time they can be outside.

Unless…….

there is water involved!!!

We are classy for sure!!!  But the main thing is – 3 hours of basketball, running around and the dry grass got some water without anyone suffering heat stroke!!

I sat in the shade and read blogs, took pictures and enjoyed being outside even though I was sweating because there was zero breeze – a perfect afternoon in our world!!!

Happy Wednesday!!!
