Real Life vs Vacation Life

I’m being featured over at Jennifer’s blog Wine to Weightlifting today!!!  She has a really great blog and does Friday spotlights – check it out if you get a chance!!

Today for my 43 I did squats with my barbell (20 pounds).  Instead of just doing a standard squat, I stayed in the squat position the entire time –

From the squat position, I alternated lifting my right leg and holding it up –

I put my right leg down (staying in a squat position still) and lifted my left leg and held it:

I counted a right leg up and left leg up as one rep – my quads were burning (and I was breathing HARD) by the time I finished all 43.

And, today I did something I rarely do – I repeated yesterday’s workout.  I’m trying to get in all 3 rounds of Taylor’s  weekly challenge after a late start this week.  It was HARD today because I’m so sore from yesterday.  Pretty sure the combat push-ups are what did it, or maybe the million burpees, or……

Anyway, even being sore, I was able to get more reps in all 3 circuits today.  I hope I can increase again when I do the 3rd round tomorrow!

Yesterday was our first day home in almost 2 weeks and it was non-stop!!!  Chris had to work – big drill weekend to get ready for.

Screen shot 2013-08-02 at 8.26.30 AMI got both boys enrolled for the new school year.  It is funny here – we have to enroll on-line and then you go up to the school and go through lines to take care of the rest of it.  I now officially have a 7th grader and a freshman!!!

Jordan started band camp yesterday and will have that every day from now until school starts (August 13).

We went shopping for Hunter’s school supplies – thankfully we only had to go to Target for everything!!

New shoes for both boys (and I might have gotten another pair of tennis shoes, too!!!).

Orthodontist appointment for Hunter.

Pretty sure that I could do with another vacation!!!

I miss my "office" view!!

I guess there is nothing like a day of reality to make you appreciate the peace of vacation even more!!!

Happy Fun Friday!!!

Even Adults Need a Time-Out Sometimes!!

Today for my 43, I wanted to do something with weights since I haven’t in awhile.  I did a bicep curl and plie squat at the same time – basic moves but it felt good!!

I used 12 pound dumbbells and that was a challenge by the last 10 or so!!!

Today I finally did the first round of this week’s challenge workout with Taylor.  This one is 3 circuits – as many reps as possible during the time.  Circuit 1 – 10 minutes, circuit 2 – 8 minutes and circuit 3 – 6 minutes.  It was pretty challenging (especially circuit 3 which was 4 different burpees – 5 reps each for the whole time and yes, 6 minutes is a long time to do nothing but burpees!!!).

Since it is already Thursday and I’m just now starting this week’s workout, I will do it the next 2 days also!!  I like to space things better but you do what you have to do!!!

If you have kids, work with kids or read anything about kids then I’m sure you have heard of the “Time-Out” concept.  When our boys were younger, we didn’t call it time-out but they did have something similar on occasion.

Last night by the time we got home and unloaded the car, I needed to be put in time-out.  I was CRANKY!!!Screen shot 2013-08-01 at 8.51.53 AMI was tired of being cooped up and ready to not be around anyone (especially my family) for a few minutes!!  I know that sounds harsh but give me a break – we just spent 2 straight days in the car for 22 hours!!!  Plus, I still had to unpack (cause I hate to leave it – I have issues!) and figure out something for dinner.

Screen shot 2013-08-01 at 8.37.41 AMI was going to try to get to the grocery store and, of course, Chris wanted to go with me.  What?!  We just spent the last 2 days  together non-stop, I think I will go alone!!!  (See, cranky!!  Usually I like it when Chris and I run errands together.)

Chris ended up pouring me a glass of wine Screen shot 2013-08-01 at 8.57.23 AMand running to the store for a few things by himself!!

So, not a true “time-out”Screen shot 2013-08-01 at 8.37.25 AMbut good for everyone.  I enjoyed a few minutes to myself and we still had a much healthier dinner than the past few days on the road!  Plus, I quit snapping at everyone.

Moral – adults can occasionally benefit from time-outs – usually we even put ourselves in them – just don’t forget the whine/wine!!!

Do you ever feel like you could benefit from a time-out?

Happy Thursday!!!

Packed Sand or Loose Sand for Working Out?

Today I did my 43 on the beach!  It was hard!!  I did a burpee with a tuck jump (although my tucks are not very high!).

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCSfRRoiuA4′]

It is HARD to jump up high in the sand!!  This was a 43 that pretty much worked my entire body.

I also did my 2nd round of this week’s workout with Taylor’s challenge.  I’m pretty sure that I’m doing the wrong workout this week but I decided to just stick with it because it is perfect for vacation – the one part that requires weights I can use my bands.  This is the workout that has 1000 total reps (700 are mountain climbers!).  Tuesday it took 14:13 and today I crushed my time – 12:23!!

And, because we are on vacation and I’m trying to maximize time, that was the extent of my work out!!  Not gonna lie – working out for less than 30 minutes is not my normal and I’m trying really hard to be OK with the fact that if I go all-out for a short amount of time (HIIT) then I don’t need to work out for hours.  Still working on the whole guilt thing!!

Burning Question:

In my 43 video today, you can see that I worked out in the loose heavy sand.  I think it’s much more difficult to perform moves that require any jumping in the loose sand.  However, when I was doing the burpees this morning, I had someone tell me that I should do them on the packed sand to really get the full benefit.

So – what do you think?  More benefits from trudging through the loose sand or the packed sand?

And – you know I have to post some more beach pictures!!

Chris and the boys playing in the water – Chris and Hunter said the waves were big enough that it was a workout.  Jordan said it wasn’t even close to a workout – maybe because he has been doing boot camp with me all summer!!!

Happy Thursday!!

My Favorite Way to Cook

I decided it was time for another burpee variation for the 43 today.  I’m still working on the awesome list of 30 burpees that Taylor @ Lifting Revolution shared awhile back.  Today I did a burpee with a lateral jump over a step – FUN TIMES!!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQT6e33BNuM’]

6:00 am boot camp was fun – we did the Move It, Move It workout (all legs!!) from Friday because I knew that none of the people who came Friday would be here this morning.  It was HUMID  – we were drenched by the end of the workout.

I decided to run on my treadmill instead of outside because I knew that I would be sucking air thanks to the mugginess.  I ran at 1.5% incline – 5 miles 31:34 + 1 mile super easy for a cool down.

Irving Naxon  – anyone know who he is?  He developed the “all-purpose” cooker which was bought by The Rival Company in 1970 and reintroduced in 1971 as the Crock Pot.

a few of the crock pots I use

I think the Crock Pot is truly  my favorite kitchen appliance!!!  I use one of my crock pots at least once a week and often as many as 3 times a week.  There have been many meals that I have 2 crock pots full of stuff!!!

Any day that I have evening plans I try to get dinner into the crock pot in the morning.  Such a great feeling to know that dinner (at least part of it) is already done!!!

I’m pretty sure that I’ve already shared my love of cookbooks before.Cookbooks

CookbooksIn my collection, I have a whole shelf devoted to crock pot/slow cooker cook books.  My favorites are from the Fix-It-and-Forget-It series.Screen shot 2013-07-07 at 8.48.52 PM

One of the great things about using a crock pot is there is really no need for a recipe.  The thing that I do the most is put a cut of meat (ribs, round steak, roast, brisket, chicken breasts, pork roast, turkey breasts, even a whole chicken) with a rub and/or a sauce of some sort and let it cook all day.  Super easy and by the end of the day we have a very tender piece of meat!

In the fall and winter I make all kinds of soups and chili in the crock pot.  In the summer, I love to use the crock pot to keep the kitchen from heating up!!

I even take one of my crock pots with me on some of our longer trips (when we stay places with a kitchen) so that we don’t have to eat out every meal and I don’t have to spend any time really cooking.

Do you use a crock pot very often?  What is your favorite recipe in the crock pot?

Happy Monday!!

Jumping, Kicking, Squatting all Night Long

Today for my 43, I did a plank with some extra stability work.  I started in elbow plank, pulled my right knee into my chest then extended my right leg into a  leg raise.  Then, I did the same thing with my left leg.  I counted a right leg and left leg move as 1 rep.

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma7agAXug6w’]

I should have timed my plank!!!  This took awhile to complete since it was 43 knee pulls/leg raises per side!

I did Insanity Asylum – Vertical Plyo before heading to the swim beach to teach Boot Camp.  I only have a few days left of Insanity – WooHoo!!!  Today I actually enjoyed the plyo workout more than I have other days – maybe because I knew it was my last time doing it for awhile!!

Boot Camp at the beach always makes me happy – the lake is peaceful early in the mornings.  Today we did Tabata boot camp and it was so much harder in the sand than it was yesterday morning in the garage!!  The sand gave us some bonus toning work!!  Plus, with all of the jumping and kicking – I pretty much took a shower in sand!!!  Good Times!!

Screen shot 2013-06-18 at 8.35.39 AMLately, every time I wake up during the night (it’s always a lot of times!!!) – I’ve been dreaming about jumping and kicking and squatting.  Screen shot 2013-06-18 at 8.34.10 AMIt’s not always me that’s jumping – sometimes I’m watching people (or maybe animals) jump – but there is always action and movement in the form of jumping and bouncing!!!Screen shot 2013-06-18 at 8.37.33 AMAll night long – jump, squat, kick…..I don’t know if it’s because I go to bed thinking about the next day’s boot camp or Insanity workout or even just trying to decide what my 43 will be or what the deal is but I’m ready for some different themed dreams!!  Screen shot 2013-06-18 at 8.38.49 AMSometimes I feel like I might be a little  obsessed with all things fitness related – that  doesn’t mean I want to dream about it every night!!!Screen shot 2013-06-18 at 8.35.04 AMSee – everyone’s jumping and moving – just like in my dreams!!!!Screen shot 2013-06-18 at 8.39.54 AMAnd, everyone is running through the list of proper form and technique – over and over.  I guess if this little guy is doing it then it isn’t that bad!!Screen shot 2013-06-18 at 8.35.25 AMBut all the nighttime jumping is wearing me out!!!  I need a night where I dream about Screen shot 2013-06-18 at 8.55.28 AMand maybe if I dream hard enough I will wake up and find myself actually relaxing in this gorgeous setting instead of jumping and kicking and squatting and doing burpees!!!!!

And the best part of these dreams?  Along with jumping there is music from my new workout craze – Zumba!!!

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzAQ1XZH-j8′]

Yep – I hear that song a lot in my dreams – while jumping!!!!

Anyone else have dreams where you wake up exhausted from all the action in the dream?

Happy Tuesday – here’s to relaxing dreams for all tonight!!!
